Responsibilities:
Job Summary


As a Flight Nurse, you will be responsible for delivering high-quality critical care, including assessment, triage, and treatment in accordance with the standards and guidelines established by Air Methods CBS Medical Director(s).

Your role will involve evaluating the severity of illness or injury to prioritize necessary care for the safe transport of critical patients to the designated facility, ensuring that safety remains the top priority throughout the transport process.


Key Responsibilities Include:

  • Delivering nursing care within your scope of practice from initial contact until patient care is transferred to the receiving medical facility; maintaining comprehensive patient care documentation.
  • Staying current in knowledge and skills through ongoing training and clinical experiences. Communicating educational needs to the Medical Base Supervisor and Medical Education Coordinator. Keeping records of required licensure, certifications, continuing education, aviation and safety training, OSHA and HIPAA training, clinical rotations, and advanced procedures, while attending relevant continuing education programs.
  • Proficiently using and maintaining all equipment and supplies utilized by Air Methods CBS. Reporting any medical equipment malfunctions and taking initial steps for repair as directed. Ensuring adequate supplies are available onboard the aircraft for patient care and maintaining cleanliness and orderliness of the aircraft for rapid response to transport requests.
  • Participating as a medical flight team member by attending pre-mission briefings and debriefings, completing necessary documentation, assisting in pre-mission liftoff checklists, and supporting the pilot as needed, including radio, navigational, and visual observation tasks. Adhering to safety standards to ensure the safety of all personnel, patients, and equipment, and conducting aircraft safety briefings as required.
  • Acting as a resource for neonatal/pediatric personnel during the transport of specialty patients by helicopter and performing advanced skills and procedures as authorized by Air Methods CBS Medical Director(s).
  • Engaging in patient and referring institution follow-up and participating in planned outreach marketing and educational activities.
  • Serving as a preceptor and/or assisting in the orientation of new employees and students as assigned, while communicating program goals and objectives.
  • Actively participating in Air Methods CBS meetings, activities, projects, and committees, including research and publishing opportunities.
  • Performing other duties as assigned.
Additional Job Requirements

  • Regular attendance is expected.
  • Travel requirement: 5%.
  • Compliance with applicable laws and Air Methods' policies is essential; all employees must adhere to Air Methods' employment practices and policies.
Supervisory Responsibilities

  • This position does not have supervisory responsibilities.

Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing.
  • A Bachelor's degree in a health-related field is preferred but not mandatory.
  • A minimum of three (3) years of recent critical care/emergency nursing experience within the last five years or as mandated by state/local EMS regulations.
  • Pre-hospital experience is preferred.
  • Flight experience is advantageous but not required.

Operation and Safety Requirements:

  • As a member of the Clinical Flight Crew, employees must maintain a weight not exceeding 225 pounds, including an empty flight suit and boots.

Computer Skills

  • Proficient in Microsoft Suite, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

  • Current RN license(s) for states of practice.
  • EMS or MICN certification/licensure as required by state regulations.
  • Current certifications in Healthcare Provider BLS/CPR; ACLS; PALS or equivalent (AHA, ARC, or ASHI only courses if state or county required) and TPATC/TNCC/ITLS/PHTLS advanced provider (if state or county required).
  • If lacking a current trauma certification, Air Methods will provide the TPATC online course to be completed prior to new hire orientation.

Other Certification Requirements:

  • Specialty certification (CFRN or CEN) is required within 24 months of hire.

Advanced Trauma Course Requirement:
One (1) of the following certifications is acceptable: TPATC, TNCC, ATCN, TNATC, or CAMTS-approved advanced trauma course before completion of third-rider training.

  • NRP certification before completion of the third-rider orientation.
  • NIMS Training IS 100, 200, 700, 800, and HazMat before completion of third-rider training.
