Job Summary

The Falk School is seeking a dedicated and compassionate Special Education Teacher to join our team. As a member of our staff, you will play a vital role in providing high-quality education and support to students with disabilities.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop and implement individualized lesson plans that align with New York State Learning Standards and students' Individual Education Plans (IEPs).
  • Implement provisions of IEPs and Behavior Implementation Plans to ensure students receive the support they need to succeed.
  • Assess students' progress through formal and informal evaluations, and use this data to inform instruction and make data-driven decisions.
  • Plan and initiate activities that promote learning, including small group and individualized instruction, to meet the diverse needs of students.
  • Create a classroom environment that is conducive to learning, considering students' intellectual, social, and emotional development, as well as their IEPs and mitigating factors.
  • Prepare, administer, and grade tests and assignments to evaluate students' progress and adjust instruction accordingly.
  • Keep accurate attendance records and other reports/records pertinent to the program.
  • Assist and counsel students in making realistic assessments of their abilities and establishing educational and occupational goals.
  • Serve as a role model for students, demonstrating appropriate behavior, anger management, and problem-solving skills.
  • Direct assigned teacher aides to support instruction and maintain classroom behavior.
  • Create strategies for maintaining orderly classroom behavior on an individual and group basis.
  • Utilize appropriate techniques of behavior management and crisis interventions, as indicated in Therapeutic Crisis Intervention guidelines, to address escalating behaviors.
Qualifications
  • Students with Disabilities New York Teacher certification is required or currently enrolled in classes leading to certification.
  • Knowledge of New York State Learning Standards, resources, and classroom management.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to operate a computer to perform work, maintain records, and prepare reports.
  • Valid driver's license is preferred.
