Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Chemical Hygiene Officer to join our team at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA). The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring compliance with safety plans, coordinating emergency response efforts, and overseeing the safe use, storage, and disposal of chemicals.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop and implement laboratory safety programs to meet regulatory requirements and address safety-related needs in the Conservation Center laboratories.
  • Advise Conservation staff, interns, fellows, and volunteers on proper laboratory safety procedures for handling, using, storing, and disposing of chemicals.
  • Oversee and manage the annual Chemical Hygiene budget for the Conservation Center.
  • Maintain Conservation chemical inventories, Safety Data Sheets (SDS), and all other Conservation Center safety-related records as mandated by OSHA and Cal/OSHA.
  • Order safety-related laboratory supplies and review Conservation Center orders of hazardous chemicals.
  • Conduct introductory safety sessions for new staff and periodic review sessions as required by OSHA to update staff awareness of current safe laboratory practices and government regulations.
  • Perform and develop quantitative and qualitative respirator fit testing, training, and education (per OSHA 29CFR for Conservation staff. Maintain records of all fit tests and medical clearances.
  • Schedule calibration of monitoring equipment, inspections, and licensing reviews by outside safety inspectors. Coordinate chemical waste disposal by outside contractors.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's Degree in Chemical Hygiene & Safety, Environmental Safety or a related field is required.
  • Post-graduate, hands-on laboratory experience with hazardous chemicals is essential.
  • Previous attendance at seminars and workshops providing updated information on government regulations regarding hazardous materials and radiation safety is preferred.
  • Familiarity with Conservation materials and procedures is preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of chemistry and its application in laboratory safety is essential.
  • Capability to write technical reports, business correspondences, and procedure manuals.
Benefits

The expected hourly range for this Los Angeles, CA based position is $55.00, subject to change, and the position is eligible for LACMA's comprehensive benefits package, including pension plan.
