Job Overview

Position Summary

The Licensed Practical Nurse operates under the direct oversight of the Department Director or Registered Nurse.

Accountable for delivering both direct and indirect patient care within the designated area of responsibility, adhering to the established standards of nursing practice at Memorial Hospital and Health Care.

Exhibits understanding of the developmental requirements of the patient demographic specific to that department. (The patient demographic is defined in each department's Scope of Practice.)

Qualifications

Educational Background:
Completion of an accredited Practical Nursing program is preferred. Valid Indiana nursing license is mandatory.

Training Requirements:
Personalized preceptor training lasting four to eight weeks, subject to the discretion of the Director. Successful completion of the orientation skills checklist is essential. IV therapy training is recommended. CPR certification is required within 30 days of employment. ACLS certification is required within one year of employment.

Experience:
No prior experience is necessary. Previous work as a Licensed Practical Nurse in a healthcare setting is preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Must possess a thorough understanding of fundamental nursing principles and practices, with more advanced skills as experience allows. Familiarity with the organization, functions, policies, and procedures of the hospital as they pertain to Patient Services is essential. Completion of a basic skills checklist within 60 days is required. Knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and potential complications related to adult medical patients is necessary. Provides nursing care to ensure a positive and secure hospitalization experience. Delivers care to adult medical patients in accordance with the Standards of Care.

Educates patients and their families about disease processes, treatment modalities, and other identified needs.

Competency validation is conducted by the Department Director or designated personnel on an individual basis, based on prior experience and capabilities, but must not exceed six months from the completion of orientation.

Provides education for patients addressing their identified educational needs.

Performance Expectations

Accurately gathers data, assists in care planning, and implements patient care. Maintains accurate and comprehensive nursing documentation. Aids in the execution of physician orders. Participates in patient education and provides staff training. Ensures a safe and hygienic environment. Manages supplies efficiently. Upholds patient safety and comfort, adheres to Infection Control protocols, and follows Standard Precautions.

Physical Requirements:
Required to be on feet for a significant portion of the day. Involves considerable pulling, pushing, and lifting. Visual, auditory, and speech acuity are critical for delivering nursing care and assessing patient needs.

Operates within nursing departments and patient rooms that are well-lit, heated, and ventilated, with occasional exposure to unpleasant conditions.

May encounter hazardous health situations; however, adherence to proper procedures should mitigate any risk to the employee.

May be required to work rotating shifts and a reasonable amount of overtime.
