Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Senior Plumbing Design Engineer to join our team at HOK. As a key member of our engineering group, you will be responsible for designing and developing plumbing and fire suppression systems for large and complex projects.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop and modify Revit models of plumbing and fire suppression systems and components, ensuring compliance with governing codes and established standards.
  • Create project drawings from Revit models, utilizing advanced knowledge of design techniques and principles.
  • Develop flow diagrams, riser diagrams, control diagrams, equipment schedules, details, and other project documents using Revit.
  • Organize and maintain Revit models and design documents for multiple projects, ensuring accuracy and completeness.
  • Develop plumbing and fire protection system specifications, utilizing knowledge of building codes and engineering principles.
  • Prepare calculations necessary for plumbing and fire suppression systems design, ensuring accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Collaborate with project teams to complete projects on aggressive schedules, utilizing effective communication and problem-solving skills.
  • Perform all work in a clear, complete, and accurate manner, adhering to HOK's standards and quality control processes.
  • Utilize Revit, Navisworks, and other clash detection software to check plumbing and fire suppression systems design for interferences with other building elements.
  • Mentor and direct the work of less experienced staff, providing guidance and support as needed.
  • Implement and utilize HOK Standards for projects and processes, ensuring consistency and quality.
  • Stay up-to-date with new knowledge and developments in engineering practices, principles, and regulation changes, applying this knowledge to improve design and delivery.
Requirements
  • Advanced knowledge of engineering principles and practices, with a focus on plumbing and fire suppression systems.
  • Advanced knowledge of building codes and regulations, with the ability to apply this knowledge to design and development.
  • Ability to design and model plumbing and fire protection systems for large and complex projects, utilizing advanced software and tools.
  • Ability to produce drawings, specifications, and calculations with limited guidance, demonstrating independence and self-motivation.
  • Ability to interpret consultant design documents and design the necessary plumbing system, utilizing effective problem-solving skills.
  • Select plumbing equipment and lay out the required equipment space, ensuring accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Coordinate with HVAC and electrical designers to coordinate the requirements, utilizing effective communication and collaboration skills.
  • Advanced knowledge of design techniques, tools, and principles involved in production of plans, sections diagrams, and equipment schedules found on drawings and in preparation of specifications.
  • Proficiency in Revit, including BIM modeling, and other software and tools utilized in the design and development process.
  • Proficiency in MS Office, including Word, Excel, and Outlook, with the ability to create and edit documents, spreadsheets, and presentations.
  • Basic knowledge about sustainability, integrated design, and LEED guidelines, with the ability to apply this knowledge to design and development.
  • Ability to perform computer drafting functions using Revit and other software, with the ability to resolve design conflicts and ensure accuracy and completeness.
  • Ability to effectively meet deadlines and work in a fast-paced environment, utilizing effective time management and prioritization skills.
  • Ability to communicate both verbally and in writing, with the ability to present ideas and concepts to project teams and stakeholders.
  • Ability to work in a team environment, collaborating with project teams and stakeholders to achieve project goals and objectives.
Education and Experience
  • High school diploma or equivalent required; Associate degree, Technology degree, or Bachelor's degree in engineering preferred.
  • Engineer in Training (EIT) certificate preferred.
  • Minimum of 5 years of plumbing and fire suppression system design experience working on a wide variety of building types, such as commercial, corporate, institutional, and civic facilities.
  • Experience working and coordinating with integrated teams, utilizing effective communication and collaboration skills.
  • Experience with high purity water systems, compressed air, and specialty gas systems is a plus.
  • LEED credential required within 6 months of employment.
  • ASPE CPD credentials preferred (required within first year of HOK employment).
