Job Summary

We are seeking a highly motivated and enthusiastic individual to join our team as a Student Trainee (Park Guide) at the U.S. Department of the Interior. As a Park Guide, you will play a vital role in providing educational and interpretive programs to visitors, promoting the natural and cultural resources of our national parks.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop and deliver engaging talks and presentations to groups of various sizes and ages.
  • Provide general information and orientation to visitors, including site-specific information and facilities.
  • Lead guided tours and walks, ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience for participants.
  • Maintain order and crowd control, preventing damage to historic sites and ensuring visitor safety.
  • Assist visitors with lost articles, car trouble, and first aid as needed.
  • Provide information on weather conditions, highway routes, and park facilities.
  • Conduct fee collection duties, including issuing park passes and managing the park pass program.
Requirements
  • U.S. Citizenship is required.
  • Appointment is subject to a background investigation and favorable adjudication.
  • Meet Selective Service Registration Act requirements for males.
  • Participate in the Direct Deposit Electronic Funds Transfer Program.
  • Pathways participant agreement is required.
  • May be required to operate a government or private motor vehicle as part of official duties.
  • Wear a uniform and comply with National Park Service uniform standards.
  • Work evenings, weekends, holidays, and overtime as needed.
  • Travel overnight away from home up to 1 night per month.
Qualifications

To qualify for this position, you must possess at least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-04 grade level in the Federal service. This experience includes activities such as oral presentation of historical, scientific, or program information to groups, or developing and/or revising technical, historical, or scientific information for oral presentation to groups. You must also have a bachelor's degree with courses such as American history, science, and/or public speaking. Volunteer experience is also creditable towards meeting the specialized experience requirements.

Documentation from your school, such as a copy of your official transcripts and class schedule, is also required to prove enrollment. If you are using education to meet qualification requirements, you must show that your education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program.
