Position Overview:


The Practical Nursing Specialist is tasked with delivering professional nursing care and initial health evaluations for individuals within a correctional environment, adhering to established protocols and security measures.

This role also serves as a vital resource for staff regarding health-related matters.

Supervision Structure:


Receives direct oversight from senior management and health services personnel, ensuring adherence to best practices and established protocols.


Key Responsibilities:
Administers medications in accordance with healthcare provider directives and nursing standards.

Executes nursing treatments as per medical orders and established guidelines.

Completes necessary nursing documentation in compliance with facility and nursing standards.

Conducts Nursing Sick Call, assessing inmate requests for medical attention.


Performs nursing evaluations and provides treatment or referrals to medical professionals based on approved protocols.

Collaborates with healthcare providers regarding sick call and overall patient care.


Communicates effectively with health services directors and facility supervisors to ensure medical conditions are appropriately addressed.

Coordinates inmate appointments with medical staff and external healthcare providers.

Delivers emergency medical assistance within the scope of nursing practice to both inmates and staff as required.


Ensures the confidentiality and accuracy of all medical records, including daily sick call logs, treatment refusals, medications dispensed, and physical examinations.


Assists in the procurement and receipt of medications from pharmacies and communicates stock needs to health services management.

Coordinates special dietary needs with healthcare providers and food service teams.


Develops, implements, assesses, and modifies nursing care plans for all inmates under the supervision of a Registered Nurse.

Provides education on general health and wellness topics to inmates in both individual and group settings.

Qualifications:

Licensure:
Must be licensed by the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Nursing.

CPR certification is mandatory.

A minimum of two (2) years of experience as a Licensed Practical Nurse is required.


Experience in a correctional facility or in substance abuse/detox nursing is preferred but not mandatory.

Availability for weekend and holiday shifts is required.

Physical Demands:


This role involves intermittent physical activity, including standing, walking, bending, kneeling, and lifting, as well as supporting inmates.

Ability to lift and transport medical equipment is necessary.

Work Environment:
This position involves working within a correctional facility setting.

Interaction with individuals who are currently incarcerated is a fundamental aspect of this role.
