Optical Fabrication Specialist

This position is responsible for performing production tasks and supporting the fabrication department. The successful candidate will work in tandem with other opticians to achieve department/company goals.

• Perform quality inspections for incoming, in-process, and finished optics utilizing various optical, mechanical measuring devices/techniques and visual inspection techniques.
• Perform cleaning of optics at various stages of the process.
• Perform production tasks in one or more of the following fabrication cells: Conventional grind/polish, Dicing/Shaping, Spindle Polish, CNC grind/polish, Aspheric Grind/Polish, or Centering.
• Complete product work IAW traveler and standard work instructions.
• Ensure travelers, datasheets and all required documentation are filled out correctly.
• Communicate safety and process concerns to supervisor/management.
• Support other opticians and mentor/train optician 1s and trainees.
• Support continuous improvement activities within the department.

• English is the primary communication language. Must be able to read and understand English.
• Good organizational skills with attention to detail.
• Ability to work as a team or alone when appropriate.
• Ability to act with integrity, professionalism, and confidentiality.
• Intermediate understanding in surface quality, handling optics, and mechanical dimensional tools (e.g. Micrometers, calipers, optical comparators, etc.).
• Intermediate understanding and experience in optical measurement equipment, such as: interferometers, autocollimators, profilometers, optical profilers, etc.
• Proficient with Microsoft Office Excel.
• Familiar with ERP systems is desirable.
• Proficient in multiple areas of optical manufacturing for optical materials (e.g. Optical glass, fused silica, infrared materials: Si, Ge, CaF2), including:
  • 3-5 axis CNC spherical and aspherical form grinding and polishing equipment.
  • Spindle, continuous and hand lapped grinding using loose abrasives and grinding pads/materials.
  • Spindle, continuous and hand lappers polishing using pitch, polyurethane pads, felts and other polishing medium.
  • Optically mounting and centering of optics to tools.
  • CNC and conventional centering of optics using mechanical and optical verification techniques.

• High School Diploma or GED.
• Prefer a self-driven, meticulous individual with strong math skills.
• 5+ years of optical fabrication experience.
• In lieu of years of experience, must be at least level 2 in Five competency areas in the Fabrication Training Matrix.
• Associates degree with a math/science focus is desired.

• Prolonged periods of standing/walking within a localized area.
• Must be able to lift 20 pounds regularly and up to 50 pounds at times.
• Must be able to access and navigate each department at the organization's facilities.

This position is on site, no remote work option.
