**Med/Surg Nursing Assistant with Health Unit Coordinator Responsibilities**
Role Summary:
The Patient Care Assistant (PCA) plays a vital role in delivering direct patient care services under the supervision of the Shift Supervisor, RN, or NT/LPN. The PCA is responsible for organizing care activities that have been delegated to support the RN in effectively addressing patient needs across various departments within the healthcare facility.
Typical Work Schedule:
12-hour day shifts, 6:00 pm to 6:30 am, with a rotation every third weekend and holiday.
Qualifications Required:
- Current certification as a Nursing Assistant in Wisconsin or the ability to obtain certification.
- BLS certification is mandatory.
- A minimum of one year of experience in Med/Surg or a hospital setting is preferred.
Key Responsibilities:
The PCA assists nursing staff in executing the nursing process to ensure the highest quality of patient care. Acting as a patient advocate, the PCA collaborates with the nursing team to coordinate patient care. Responsibilities include:
- Providing daily patient care, activities, and other tasks as delegated by nursing staff.
- Monitoring and engaging with all patient service departments; utilizing interdisciplinary input to plan, implement, and evaluate care.
- Performing additional duties as assigned within the scope of PCA practice.
Health Unit Coordinator Duties:
The Health Unit Coordinator (HUC) serves as the primary contact for nursing units (Med Surg, ED, and OB) and is responsible for transcription, clerical, and reception tasks. Essential skills include:
- Critical thinking and proficiency in computer usage.
- Familiarity with office equipment such as fax machines, copiers, and printers.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:
- Ability to perform essential functions of a Patient Care Assistant.
- Effective participation in the interdisciplinary care team.
- Development and maintenance of positive working relationships with patients, families, and colleagues.
- Capacity to manage stress effectively.
- Demonstrated empathy and compassion.
- Strong time management and organizational skills.
- Adherence to established rules and protocols.
- Excellent observational skills.
- Outstanding verbal and written communication abilities.
- Commitment to maintaining confidentiality as per organizational policy.
