Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Produce Department Manager to join our team at Safeway. As a key member of our store operations team, you will be responsible for overseeing the daily functions of the produce department, ensuring exceptional customer service, and driving sales and profit objectives.

Key Responsibilities
  • Customer Service: Champion company customer service programs to meet or exceed division customer service goals. Handle customer relations in a positive manner, including effective resolution of customer complaints.
  • Department Operations: Supervise the day-to-day functions of the produce department to achieve customer service, sales, and profit objectives.
  • Team Management: Supervise, motivate, direct, train, and hire produce personnel. Monitor associate performance and recommend personnel actions such as hiring, firing, layoff, and disciplinary actions.
  • Inventory Management: Conduct daily inspections of all produce sections and initiate corrective measures to ensure compliance with product freshness and quality. Rotate products, discard outdated or spoiled product, and maintain in-stock conditions, sanitation, and safety requirements.
  • Merchandising: Implement effective promotional and seasonal displays. Control shrink and expenses. Accurately complete and monitor daily log sheets, purchase reports, and sales and labor reports.
  • Inventory Control: Order, check, receive, and control inventory to ensure adequate proper inventory levels, product quality, eye appeal, and freshness. Check for and prevent the sale of outdated or spoiled products.
  • Quality Control: Ensure produce quality, freshness, and quantity standards are met.
  • Store Operations: Ensure cleanliness and sanitation of sales floor and work area, cooler, equipment, wet boxes, and cases.
  • Customer Service: Assist customers by making product suggestions and engaging in suggestive selling. Make intercom announcements.
Requirements
  • Education and Experience: High school diploma or equivalent required. 2+ years of experience in produce management or a related field.
  • Skills and Abilities: Strong communication skills, good leadership and interpersonal skills, proven ability to manage people, and ability to maintain composure in dealing with customers and co-workers.
  • Physical Demands: Frequently reaches, lifts, stacks, and maneuvers objects of varying dimensions and weights up to approximately 75 lbs. Bends, stoops, and reaches frequently and occasionally climbs ladders. Pushes and pulls fully loaded hand trucks, six-wheel carts, and pallet jacks.
Working Conditions

Hands are frequently exposed to water, ice, and cleaning agents. Exposure to 35°F while handling products in cold cases and 28°F while handling products in cooler. Working conditions consist of a temperature-controlled store environment.
