As a School Mental Health Counselor, your primary role will be to assist students in achieving success in their academic, social, and emotional lives. This will be accomplished through individual and group counseling, as well as collaboration with educators, parents, and other professionals to cultivate a safe and supportive learning atmosphere that enhances the connection between home and school.
‖ Key Responsibilities:
- Facilitating individual and group counseling sessions to address interpersonal or family issues that may hinder academic performance, including crisis intervention as necessary.
- Conducting interviews with students, family members, and school staff to gather essential information for assessing students' social, emotional, and behavioral adjustments.
- Maintaining ongoing communication with students' parents/guardians to update them on their child's progress, challenges, and any home life changes that may impact school performance.
- Creating and revising Individualized Education Plans (IEP) and Positive Behavior Intervention Plans (PBIP) in compliance with relevant regulations.
- Participating in IEP team meetings and other collaborative discussions to address specific student and parent concerns.
- Working alongside educational and social service professionals to develop suitable agency services for students and their families.
- Providing case management for students, which includes coordinating parent meetings, managing emergency transportation requests, and addressing disciplinary actions.
- Collaborating with teachers and district personnel to devise effective solutions for learning and behavioral challenges while maintaining a positive company image.
- Ensuring the implementation of positive teaching methods by observing classroom staff and providing feedback on IEP goals and PBIP execution.
- Offering guidance to teachers in developing classroom schedules and maintaining student data systems to ensure appropriate curriculum and services.
- Monitoring student progress through regular reviews of classroom data and providing necessary training to staff to meet student needs.
- Acting as a role model for effective teaching and communication, reinforcing the organization's commitment to data-driven decision-making and positive reinforcement.
‖ Required Qualifications:
- A Bachelor’s degree or higher in educational counseling, therapy, or a closely related field.
- Compliance with state and district requirements for school counselor licensing and credentials.
- Accepted licenses include:
- Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist - LMFT
- Educational Psychologist
- Licensed Clinical Social Worker - LCSW
- Licensed Master Social Worker - LMSW
- Special education certification is preferred.
- A minimum of 2 years of experience working with students with emotional disorders in an educational setting.
- Familiarity with applied behavior analysis is preferred.
- Experience in special education program settings is preferred.
- Strong oral and written communication, conflict resolution, multitasking, and organizational skills.
- Proficiency in relevant technology, including Microsoft Office Suite and database management.
