Substation Journeyman

We are seeking a highly skilled Substation Journeyman to join our team at Arizona Public Service (APS). As a key member of our substation maintenance team, you will be responsible for ensuring the safe and reliable operation of our high-voltage substation equipment.

• Perform routine maintenance and repairs on substation equipment, including transformers, circuit breakers, and switchgear.
• Conduct visual inspections of substation equipment and report any defects or issues to management.
• Assist in the installation and testing of new substation equipment.
• Work safely and efficiently in a fast-paced environment, with minimal supervision.
• Collaborate with other team members to achieve project goals and objectives.

• High school diploma or equivalent required; associate's or bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or a related field preferred.
• Completed a registered electrician apprenticeship program or equivalent training program.
• One year of experience as an electrician or in a related field.
• Valid manual Class A Commercial Drivers License (CDL) with no mechanical restrictions.
• Ability to work overtime and out-of-town assignments as needed.
• Must live within a reasonable distance of our headquarters.

• Considerable experience performing journeyman-level high voltage substation duties with an electric utility or other entity operating and maintaining high voltage substation equipment.
• Experienced in writing and executing switching orders, and basic computer skills such as Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.

Testing Information

Tests are only administered to referred candidates. More information about our tests and the testing process can be found HERE.

A written [paper and pencil] test will be administered. A test using a computer with keyboard will be administered. A hands-on skills test will be administered. E-mail will be the method of contact with job applicants for test scheduling. Role Type

Plant/Field Role: This position requires work to be performed in the field and/or at the work site, due to the nature of work.

Eligibility: Must live or relocate within reasonable distance to the headquarters. Reasonable distance is defined as one (1) hour for Metro and State Region locations. Reasonable distance for Troublemen, Local Representatives, and Substation Technicians is defined as thirty (30) minutes for Metro locations and forty-five (45) minutes for State Region locations. Failure to accept a job offer due to the reasonable distance requirement specific to the position will be counted toward the bid restriction as described in Article 13, Section 11

CIP Requirement: This position requires Critical Infrastructure Protection (CIP) access consistent with North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) standards. The applicant considered for this role will be required to obtain and maintain CIP access for the duration of employment in this position. A full seven (7) year criminal history will be obtained through the pre-employment background check process (or, for current employees, through supplemental background check process) to fulfill the CIP access requirements. In addition, this position requires an additional background check every seven years to maintain access.
