Job Summary

Under the supervision of the DARE-KY Principal Investigator, the Postdoctoral Researcher: DARE-KY will engage in research focused on investigating aspects of soilless agriculture including nutrient management, microbial dynamics, and community assembly and metagenomics of endemic microbes. As part of this role, the hire will primarily be responsible for leading or assisting with experiments using molecular and omics technologies, utilize bioinformatics to analyze data, publish peer-review scientific articles, and maintain and operate laboratory equipment and chemical inventories. This is a grant-funded position.

Essential Job Functions

• Conduct lab experiments using molecular and omics technologies, such as DNA/RNA extraction, PCR, qPCR, DNA sequencing, and RNA sequencing.
• Perform data analysis using bioinformatics software and assist in interpreting results.
• Train graduate and undergraduate students on laboratory techniques.
• Maintain laboratory equipment, chemical and supply inventories, and compliance with safety protocols.
• Assist in the design, execution, and analysis of experiments related to soilless agriculture.
• Collaborate with project partners to plan and execute experiments and contribute to the development of research protocols.
• Develop presentations and publications from research projects.
• Attend and present research findings through seminars, workshops, and conferences.
• Assist in the setup and maintenance of soilless agriculture systems, including monitoring water quality parameters, plant husbandry, and troubleshooting issues.
• Keep accurate records of experimental procedures, results, and observations.
• Assist faculty with grant proposal preparation.

• Demonstrated proficiency in organizing and coordinating tasks.
• Capability to create, compose, and edit written scientific materials.
• Proactive initiative, resourcefulness, and punctuality.

Supervisory Responsibility

• Will oversee graduate students and undergraduate students with PI oversight.

• Perform other related duties as necessary.

Qualifications

• Ph.D. in Microbiology, Biotechnology, Plant Science, Bioinformatics, or a related field.
• Extensive experience with molecular and omics technologies (e.g., metagenomics, transcriptomics, proteomics).
• Proficiency in bioinformatics tools and software for data analysis.
• Demonstrated ability to conduct independent research and publish findings in peer-reviewed journals.
• Experience with Agilent, Oxford Nanopore, ThermoFisher, and Hach laboratory equipment is a plus.

Working Conditions

• Most work will be performed in an interior lab and in the field at a farm.
• Will require working in hot environments like greenhouses or wet labs.
• Must be able to lift 50+ pounds to perform aquaponics-related tasks.
