Job Title: Patrol Officer

Join Kutztown University's Public Safety and Police Services team as a Patrol Officer. This is a full-time position that requires providing police services and protection to the university's property, grounds, facilities, clientele, employees, and the general public.

Job Summary

The Patrol Officer will provide routine and customary police services under the direction of a higher-ranking police officer or the chief of the police department on the Kutztown campus. This includes making routine decisions and performing actions guided by standard police procedures, statutes, case law, and general university policies and procedures.

Essential Duties
  • Patrol campus by foot, vehicle, and/or bike to ensure proper security of university property and buildings.
  • Respond to calls for assistance, including criminal and general assistance, fire, burglary alarms, and emergencies on campus.
  • Complete and file reports of crimes and other police matters.
  • Provide assistance to other local law enforcement agencies at the direction of the senior officer in charge.
  • Provide basic security and law enforcement services at university events.
  • Provide transportation and escort services to students and other visitors to campus.
  • File appropriate criminal charges for violations of Commonwealth laws and/or enforce vehicle code violations.
  • Investigate traffic accidents and prepare reports.
  • Direct traffic, enforce parking regulations, make criminal arrests, serve warrants, transport prisoners, take fingerprints, transport funds for university deposits, testify in court, attend arraignments and preliminary hearings, and enforce university policies and procedures.
  • Perform routine building checks for safety hazards, mechanical problems, and failures.
Requirements
  • Act 120 certification and/or have Act 120 certification by anticipated hire date.
  • One year of police experience, with Act 120 certification qualifying as one year of police experience.
  • Valid Pennsylvania Motor Vehicle operator's license.
  • Ability to work nights, weekends, and overtime.
  • Independent judgment with some supervision.
  • Knowledge of modern police practices and methods used in crime investigation and the identification and preservation of physical evidence.
  • Knowledge of Commonwealth laws, rules, and regulations.
  • Excellent oral and written skills.
  • Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Strong background in community-oriented policing and crime prevention.
  • Experience as a patrol officer with a university/college.
