Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and safety-conscious School Bus Driver Trainee to join our team at Dayton Public Schools. As a School Bus Driver Trainee, you will be responsible for safely transporting students to and from school, as well as performing minor maintenance tasks on the bus.

Key Responsibilities
  • Drive a school bus on an established route, adhering to Ohio Department of Education and District requirements, department policy, and other applicable rules, regulations, and procedures.
  • Conduct pre-trip and post-trip inspections on the assigned bus, documenting any defects or issues.
  • Transport students, parents, and district staff for field trips and special activities as assigned.
  • Assist pupils with special needs, providing assistance with boarding and exiting the bus, securing safety restraints, and operating a wheelchair lift.
  • Communicate with dispatchers and others via two-way radio, using appropriate and professional language and speech.
  • Supervise the behavior of pupils on the school bus, providing verbal directions as needed to ensure their safety.
  • Participate in all in-service and other training, maintaining a Commercial Driver's license, and following various District and departmental policies, rules, and regulations.
Requirements
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or have the legal right to work in the U.S.
  • Must be 21 years of age
  • Must be able to obtain a valid Ohio Class B or higher Commercial Driver License with School Bus and Passenger endorsements, and no air brake restriction
  • Must be insurable by the Board's insurance carrier, including no Driving Under the Influence (DUI) convictions, no more than six (6) points on driving record in the past three (3) years, and passing a Federal and Ohio Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigation background check in accordance with Ohio Administrative Code Section
  • Must have at least four (4) years of experience operating motorized vehicles, capable of administering basic first aid, including Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), and knowledge of motor vehicle traffic laws, safety rules, and related regulations
Work Environment

The work environment for this position involves regular exposure to mechanical fluids and hazards present in a vehicle maintenance facility, as well as regular exposure to weather conditions. The position requires the ability to lift up to fifty (50) pounds, read and write to complete forms, reports, and other documents, and understand and follow verbal and written instructions.
