Job Overview: Registered Nurses in the Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit (CVICU) at the University of Kentucky Chandler Hospital deliver care primarily to adult patients. This unit specializes in the recovery of patients following surgical interventions such as heart bypass, post-operative cardiothoracic procedures, heart/lung transplants, and open-heart surgeries, as well as managing conditions like congestive heart failure, coronary artery disease, cardiogenic shock, and sepsis.
Patients may have a length of stay ranging from overnight to several weeks or months. The unit is supported by a clinical nurse specialist who provides education, referrals, and consultations for staff, patients, and their families.
Core Responsibilities: The primary duties of this position involve delivering comprehensive, continuous, and patient-centered care, which includes:
- Assessing, documenting, planning, implementing, teaching, developing, and evaluating a thorough nursing care plan.
- Providing direct patient care and ensuring patient satisfaction.
- Training and delegating tasks to Nursing Care Technicians (Nursing Assistants).
- Adhering to University policies and procedures, as well as federal, state, and local regulations.
This role fosters collaborative efforts among nursing staff and physicians to enhance communication and improve patient outcomes, utilizing the nursing process alongside a comprehensive patient-centered care plan.
Skills / Knowledge / Abilities: The ideal candidate will possess:
- Knowledge of Maslow's eight Basic Human Needs and their prioritization within Gordon's Functional Health Patterns Framework, as well as Swanson's Caring model.
- Exceptional direct patient care and critical thinking abilities.
- Basic computer navigation skills and familiarity with the internet.
- Professional and respectful communication skills with patients, families, colleagues, and physicians.
- Strong organizational, prioritization, and delegation skills.
The candidate should be highly motivated, proactive, and confident in advocating for patients and their families. A strong team player who values open and honest communication with colleagues and physicians is essential.
Additionally, the ideal candidate will demonstrate exceptional technical skills and a proven ability to work both collaboratively and independently.

Preferred Education/Experience: BSN with at least 1 year of RN experience preferred.
