Surgical Technologist I

The Surgical Technologist I plays a vital role in the operating room, working under the supervision of a surgeon and registered nurse to ensure the safe and effective conduct of invasive surgical procedures. This position requires expertise in sterile and aseptic technique, as well as knowledge of human anatomy and surgical procedures.
Key Responsibilities- Performs technical skill duties in all operating room specialty service areas, adhering to accepted standards of process.
- Provides proper maintenance, assembly, handling, and sterilization techniques of specialty instrumentation.
- Follows aseptic technique, identifying and addressing contamination and/or breaks in technique.
- Performs surgical counts, reporting discrepancies as necessary.
- Assists in the proper identification, preparation, handling, and labeling of surgical specimens.
- Participates in the planning and setup of instruments, supplies, and surgical drapes to ensure optimal accessibility during procedures.
- Assists the surgeon, demonstrating an understanding of patient anatomy and abnormalities affecting the surgical procedure.
- Assists in case selection and instrument planning.
- Recognizes and modifies scrubbing procedures based on pertinent information, communicating with the surgical team.
- Responds to surgical emergencies, following hospital-wide emergency management plans.
- Inventory, receives, and stores supplies under the direction of Surgical Services leadership.
- Identifies and reports defective instruments, supplies, and equipment.
- Assists the registered nurse during the intraoperative implementation phase of nursing practice.
- Operates complex equipment and resources in the operating room, troubleshooting as necessary.
- Serves as a mentor for Surgical Technician Trainees and preceptor as needed.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Provider certification
- Graduate of an accredited Surgical Technology or Nursing Program, or Military Training Program in Surgical Technology
- 0-3 years of professional experience
- Successful completion of service-specific UNC Health Surgical Technologist competencies
- Strong communication skills and customer service relations
- Excellent organizational and priority-setting skills
This position is located at UNC Medical Center, Children's OR, and requires variable shifts, including weekday evenings and weekends. The operating room environment is fast-paced, and the ability to work effectively in a team setting is essential.
