As a key member of the Radiation Oncology team, you will deliver expert physics services while adhering to the highest standards of practice and regulatory compliance. Your role will also encompass providing urgent physics support to the Diagnostic Radiology and Nuclear Medicine Departments when standard resources are unavailable.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Operational Management of Medical Physics:
    • Deliver ongoing education to the radiation oncology staff regarding medical physics, equipment, and radiation safety, while also coordinating annual training sessions for the department.
    • Conduct acceptance testing and performance verification of x-ray equipment within the radiation oncology department.
    • Oversee the maintenance of instruments essential for quality control, imaging quality, and patient treatment assessments.
    • Design and create treatment aids and beam modifiers as required.
    • Collaborate with radiation oncologists and treatment teams on the physical and radiobiological elements of patient treatments and the formulation of treatment plans.
    • Gather and manage data necessary for treatment and planning in the designated computer systems.
    • Calculate dose distributions and machine settings for patient therapies.
    • Innovate techniques (hardware, software, or procedural) to enhance the administration of radiation treatments.
    • Collect beam data for accurate patient dose calculations.
  • Calibration of Radiation Sources and Equipment:
    • Perform measurements leading to necessary calibrations.
    • Utilize appropriate measuring devices for the calibration of radiation sources.
    • Conduct annual calibrations of all diagnostic and therapeutic radiation-producing equipment within the radiation oncology department.
    • Coordinate the calibration of essential equipment by a standards laboratory at specified energies and intervals.
    • Verify the calibration of radioactive sources and materials as required.
  • Quality Control Program Development:
    • Review and validate dosimetrists' treatment plans for precision and suitability.
    • Conduct weekly chart audits of patients undergoing treatment.
    • Perform in-vivo measurements to confirm the delivered dose to patients as necessary.
    • Maintain records of quality assurance measurements and generate reports as needed.
    • Execute quality assurance tests on radiation oncology equipment according to manufacturer, AAPM, and IEMA guidelines on a weekly, monthly, quarterly, and annual basis.
    • Ensure the QC program complies with the Illinois Emergency Management Agency requirements.
    • Oversee all service and upgrades on radiation oncology equipment, requiring physicist approval before clinical use.
    • Conduct annual absolute dose output assessments of linear accelerators with independent third-party institutions.
  • Continuous Improvement and Training:
    • Stay informed about advancements in radiotherapeutic treatment delivery and techniques.
    • Engage with medical physics literature relevant to radiation oncology.
    • Participate in training and refresher courses to maintain expertise.
    • Contribute to departmental meetings focused on process improvement and practice enhancement.
    • Engage in physics conference calls.
  • Resource Allocation Planning:
    • Recommend equipment replacements based on evaluations of useful life.
    • Assist in developing efficient systems for personnel utilization in medical physics.
    • Participate in patient discussion conferences.
  • Radiation Safety Oversight:
    • Implement and supervise radiation safety protocols within the radiation oncology department to meet or exceed state and federal regulations.
    • Fulfill all radiation safety and licensing obligations in compliance with regulatory requirements.
    • Assist in preparing state and federal licenses and amendments for radioactive materials usage.
    • Maintain registration as a therapeutic medical physicist with the Illinois Emergency Management Agency.

Education and Experience Requirements:

  • Master's or Doctorate in Medical Physics or Physics, with completion of a CAMPEP accredited residency in Therapeutic Medical Physics or three years of clinical experience.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Proficient clinical skills in quality assurance testing, dosimetric calibration of therapy equipment, and the execution of external beam and brachytherapy treatments. Strong teamwork capabilities across departments. Excellent communication and presentation skills. Comprehensive understanding of radiation measuring devices and regulations at both state and federal levels. Familiarity with computer applications pertinent to therapeutic medical physics.
  • Eligibility for board certification by the American Board of Radiology in Therapeutic Medical Physics.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

  • Willingness to travel to various clinical sites as needed. Flexibility to accommodate irregular and/or extended working hours. Capability to perform medium lifting (up to 50 pounds occasionally and 25 pounds frequently) for radiation measurement tasks.
