Montana Department of Transportation is seeking a Maintenance Technician for the Scobey Section. This role encompasses a diverse range of responsibilities including labor tasks, leadership duties, equipment operation, and truck driving for highway upkeep. The Maintenance Technician is responsible for operating various machinery, including trucks, to conduct routine maintenance tasks such as ditch cleaning, patching, overlays, fence repairs, lawn mowing, and transporting materials or equipment. During winter months, the technician will load sanding materials and perform snow removal and sanding duties. The position requires oversight of machine functionality, including pre-operational checks, scheduled maintenance, fluid additions, and parts replacements. Additional related tasks may be assigned as necessary.

Qualifications
Education & Experience: Candidates must possess knowledge of highway maintenance and the equipment typically used in this field, including basic diesel/gasoline vehicle maintenance:
Required Education and Experience:
All levels require:
- One (1) year of experience driving heavy trucks and operating construction equipment; basic math, computer skills, and record-keeping abilities; and the capacity to estimate material requirements.
- A valid Montana Class A Type II Commercial Operators license with endorsements for air brakes and tanker is mandatory. Applicants with a Class B license or a learner's permit and relevant experience are encouraged to apply.
Maintenance Technician I ($27.59)
- Requires one (1) year of experience driving heavy trucks or operating construction equipment.
- Requires two (2) years of documented experience from another city, county, or state highway road department focused on road maintenance.
- Requires three (3) or more years of documented experience from another city, county, or state highway road department focused on road maintenance.
Additional Information
- The successful applicant must reside or relocate within 45 road miles of the assigned maintenance section and must have a telephone or be reasonably accessible to the section headquarters. Relocation assistance may be available at the time of offer.

- This position is governed by a Career Ladder Advancement Policy (Level I - V) with pay based on the level. Pay and placement in the career ladder are determined by MDT time in grade, classroom training, practical experience, and successful completion of the MDT Maintenance Academy. City and county road maintenance experience will be considered.
