The Quality Assurance Technician I plays a crucial role in ensuring that products meet safety and quality standards as required by regulatory bodies, customers, and internal protocols. This position involves conducting thorough analyses on wheat and flour, documenting findings, and promptly reporting any discrepancies to the supervisor. The QA Technician will also gather additional samples as necessary and manage the sample library. Participation in internal facility audits and support for the Lead QA Technician in various daily tasks is expected. This role operates on a 1st Shift schedule, typically from 7am to 3pm.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Conduct preparation and analysis of all wheat and flour product samples, including chemical testing for ingredients, mycotoxins, and pesticide residues; physical assessments of moisture, ash content, falling numbers (amylase activity in flour, sprout damage in wheat), flour stability, pH levels, as well as visual and sensory evaluations.
  • Ensure product safety and compliance with all regulatory, internal, and customer standards, immediately reporting any nonconformance or deviations to the Supervisor or QA Manager.
  • Prepare product samples for submission to third-party laboratories for further testing.
  • Assist in investigating customer complaints and product non-compliance issues.
  • Implement and uphold Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP), food safety principles, and sanitation protocols within the laboratory and across the facility.
  • Support the Lead QA Technician in the preparation and review of Certificates of Analysis for products, ensuring inclusion with outgoing shipments.
  • Manage sample retention and filing, maintaining retained samples appropriately.
  • Conduct inspections and documentation of tailings.
  • Collaborate closely with production and PLW staff to address quality and food safety concerns.
  • Assist the Lead QA Technician in verifying laboratory equipment calibrations.
  • Perform additional related duties as assigned to ensure the efficient operation of the QA laboratory and food safety initiatives.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High School Diploma with at least 1 year of experience in a food processing environment.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel applications.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • On-the-job training will be provided.
  • Safety training is mandatory and will be provided in group settings, as well as through computer-based modules.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Flexibility to work varied hours, including evenings, weekends, and shifts as required.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT:

  • This role requires physical activities such as lifting, straining, and standing or walking on concrete surfaces.
  • Exposure to environmental factors such as noise, dust, and varying temperatures.
  • Ability to work in extreme climate conditions, with temperatures ranging from 40 to 100 degrees.
  • Potential exposure to manufacturing equipment hazards, particularly forklifts.
  • Climbing of ladders may be necessary.
