Position Overview
Uncommon High School Science Educators collaborate across the network to equip all students with the necessary tools and knowledge to engage critically in the scientific field, nurturing them into self-directed learners.

At the core of all Science courses is inquiry-based learning, emphasizing student discourse and scientific practices.

Science educators utilize a variety of instructional methods to ignite a passion for scientific inquiry and analysis among their students.

Our educators prepare all students to have the option to pursue and excel in any STEM field.

We aim to cultivate citizen scientists who possess the tools and knowledge to engage critically in science, regardless of their chosen university major or career path.

Our educators become experts in their subject matter and possess a strong ability to motivate and inspire high school students.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Instruction
    Deliver a curriculum that encompasses, but is not limited to, the analysis of Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Environmental Sciences, preparing students for Advanced Placement (AP) and collegiate-level coursework. Develop students' skills in questioning, modeling, constructing explanations, data analysis, argumentation, and conducting interactive labs. Create an environment where students feel empowered to use their voices in scientific discussions. Facilitate student-led discourse, enabling students to use evidence to formulate sophisticated claims and critique arguments. Guide student-led inquiries on various scientific topics and engage students in lab and project-based performance tasks. Collaborate with the Science department to set academic and engagement goals for students.
  2. Data Analysis
    Engage in weekly meetings with your principal and/or instructional coach to analyze and respond to trends in student work samples and assessments. Learn and implement strategies to differentiate instruction for all learners in your classroom.
  3. School Culture
    Build positive relationships with students to ensure they feel seen, valued, and heard. Collaborate with students' families to ensure appropriate resources are available to support their child's learning needs. Participate in practice-based professional development, mentorship, and coaching sessions. Engage in weekly, school-wide meetings to foster community, model core values, and promote student achievement. Partner with your grade-level team to develop academic goals and instructional strategies.

Required Experience:

A demonstrated interest in impacting K-12 students in urban schools and communities (1-2 years of experience preferred). Academic expertise in Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, or related fields of study. A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university is required prior to the start of employment. Certification is not required to be hired at Uncommon, but candidates must meet NY state certification eligibility requirements. To meet these requirements, candidates must enroll in a teacher preparation program and maintain a GPA of 2.75 or higher during their employment if they do not have a degree in education. Uncommon Schools teachers are required to obtain certification in the state of New York within a reasonable timeframe after beginning employment.

The starting compensation for this role based in New York ranges from $50,000 to $64,700.

The starting pay will depend on various factors including but not limited to relevant professional experience, education, certifications, and tenure with Uncommon Schools. We do not currently cap salary ranges for current staff members.
