Our client hospital in IL is looking for a Med Surg Float RN for a 13-week contract. For more information, please contact Medical Solutions. This position accepts local clinicians, and a temp license can be obtained within 14 business days.

Unit Information
  • Unit: Med Surg/ TELE - Inpatient Surgical - 3rd floor
  • Beds: 48 (two buildings)

The nurse-to-patient ratio is 1:4-6, with LPNs available to assist. The primary care nursing model is frequently used, and the nurse must be comfortable with this approach.

Required Certifications
  • BLS: Basic Life Support
  • NIHSS: National Institute of Health Stroke Scale

The common diagnoses and patient types include neuro-laminectomy, cervical fusion, LESI, belly surgery-ostomies, hernia repair, joint replacement-total hips/knees. The nurse will also be responsible for managing patients with PICC, TPN, Lipids, fem pop bypass, dialysis catheter insertions, BKA, AKA, DM, PCA, some epidurals, iv abx, chronic pain (narcotics), and sepsis.

Experience and Skills
  • Must have: Total joint experience, understanding of PCA pumps, reversal drugs (narcan), sepsis management, experience with TPN/Lipids, and narcotic usage.
  • Preferred: 1 year of experience in surgical nursing.

The nurse will be required to titrate drips, including heparin, and will work with a tele-monitor tech to monitor patients. The charge nurse will take an assignment, and the nurse will be expected to interpret strips using Draeger monitors.

Shifts and Scheduling
  • Shifts: 3-12 hour shifts starting at 7
  • Scheduling: Will not guarantee block scheduling, but will discuss with the leader for any scheduling needs.

The nurse will work every other weekend, Saturday and Sunday, and will be in the holiday rotation with core staff. There is no call or standby requirement, and the nurse will float to like units only.

Additional Notes

This is a fast-paced unit with heavy patient loads. The nurse can expect to admit 8-12 surgery patients per day and discharge patients at the same time.
