The Psychiatric Nursing Assistant II (PNA II) is responsible for performing moderately complex rehabilitative patient care services under the clinical supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN), ensuring the delivery of quality psychiatric nursing care in an inpatient environment.
Key responsibilities include providing emergency, health, and personal care services to patients; observing, reporting, and documenting patient conditions and behaviors in an electronic record; engaging with patients therapeutically; and participating in both individualized and unit-based programming.
The PNA II plays a crucial role in maintaining direct and ongoing therapeutic interactions with patients to enhance living and social skills, thereby promoting progress towards a less restrictive environment.
As a vital member of the recovery or admissions team, the PNA II provides verbal and written documentation regarding individual patient behaviors, including progress or setbacks, in relation to the individualized recovery plan.
Participates in shift reports and recovery team meetings. Performs delegated nursing duties within competency. May provide guidance to PNA Is. Works under general supervision, with limited latitude for initiative and independent judgment. The PNA II is accountable for assigned property but has no financial responsibilities.It is important to understand that duties, work locations, and shift patterns may change as determined by administration to meet the hospital's needs.
Exposure to blood or other potentially infectious materials may be part of the duties. This employee has full access to a limited set of records in accordance with HIPAA regulations.Performs additional duties as assigned by the supervisor to ensure the efficient operation of the patient care unit.
Other responsibilities may include actively participating in or supporting the agency's obligations for disaster response and/or recovery or Continuity of Operations (COOP) activation, which may require alternate shift patterns and/or locations.
Essential Job Functions:
- Regular attendance is required, and the employee may be required to work a specific shift schedule or, at times, a rotating schedule, extended shifts, and/or overtime in accordance with agency leave policy.
- Utilizes therapeutic communication skills to effectively engage patients in meeting their individual recovery plan objectives. If working nights, maintains a quiet and restful environment to support patients' rest and sleep. If working in admissions, facilitates the admissions process by reassuring patients during evaluations and providing necessary documentation.
- Provides supportive, age-appropriate care to patients as assigned by the Registered Nurse (RN) or designee, assisting with daily living activities, hygiene, and nutrition to promote independence and self-care.
- Monitors patients as assigned, ensuring the health and safety of all individuals. Escorts patients to appointments as necessary.
- Acts as a liaison to the recovery or admissions team, maintaining ongoing verbal and written communication regarding patients' progress towards individualized goals. Actively participates in implementing individualized recovery plans and offers consistent support to assist patients in achieving their objectives.
- Employs basic computer skills, documentation skills, and reporting procedures to communicate patient care information clearly and concisely in a timely manner.
- Assists the licensed nurse in preparing patients for medication administration or treatment. Takes and monitors vital signs and performs other assigned tasks within competency.
- Promotes safety through continuous monitoring of the environment and active engagement with patients to minimize unsafe situations and injuries.
- Assists in facilitating programming offered on the unit or at the facility. Co-facilitates groups as assigned or requested and encourages patient participation.
- Responds effectively in crisis or psychiatric emergency situations using verbal de-escalation and the application of Treatment Intervention Protection Strategies (TIPS), and/or other more restrictive interventions under the direct supervision of an RN to avert crises and ensure patient safety. Communicates effectively with team members to foster a culture that promotes the least restrictive interventions necessary.
- Performs CPR/Heimlich techniques and utilizes an Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) according to the specifications of the American Heart Association.
- In the absence of PNA III and IV, provides guidance, as requested, to PNA Is in the performance of duties assigned by an RN to maintain smooth and efficient patient care.
- Provides timely, clinically relevant patient information (such as possible side effects of medication, disease/injury, behavioral escalation, etc.) to the RN based on direct observation and interaction with patients to promote safety.
- Serves as a preceptor for new employees (PNA Is) and temporarily assigned personnel to the unit.
- Participates in unit and hospital committees as appointed.
- Performs other duties as assigned, including actively participating in or supporting the agency's obligations for disaster response and/or recovery or Continuity of Operations (COOP) activation, which may require alternate shift patterns and/or locations.
- Knowledge of patient care techniques and treatment, therapy, developmental, and patient-centered recovery programs.
- Proficiency in basic computer skills.
- Strong interpersonal and leadership skills with the ability to interact effectively with team members.
- Skill in taking vital signs.
- Ability to read, write, and understand English to effectively communicate and execute verbal and written instructions.
- Capability to provide patient care, administer first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation, and conduct TIPS.
- Ability to collaborate with others and accept supervision.
- Ability to train and provide guidance to others.
