Key Responsibilities- Direct Patient Care
- Assist with patient admissions, transfers, and discharges
- Take and record vital signs, including temperature, pulse, respirations, weight, height, and blood pressure
- Measure and record intake and output, including output from drains
- Apply cardiac monitors and oximetry
- Obtain EKGs and other diagnostic tests as ordered
- Perform normal newborn hearing screening and other developmental assessments
- Collect capillary blood glucose samples and perform phlebotomy
- Apply fetal monitor equipment and discontinue heplocks and foley catheters
- Administer enemas and collect specimens as needed
- Provide morning care, bed baths, and evening care to patients
- Assist with feeding and nourishment, including feeding normal newborns
- Ambulate patients and instruct on walker, cane, and crutch walking
- Assist with pre- and post-operative care, positioning patients, and applying special equipment
- Apply comfort and safety measures, including side rails and call lights
- Set up oxygen and suction equipment and other respiratory equipment
- Apply dressings to Stage I and Stage II skin breakdown
- Prepare patient rooms for MD or RN assessment, evaluation, diagnostic, and therapeutic procedures
- Transport patients, equipment, and supplies as needed
- Respond to emergency situations and initiate basic life support
- Report observations and document patient care activities
- Indirect Patient Care
- Maintain a safe and clean environment, including temperature logs, refrigerator maintenance, and linen management
- Perform duties delegated by the RN to facilitate patient care and unit operations
- Collect and inventory patient belongings on admission, transfer, and discharge
- Complete charges and order supplies as needed
- Obtain necessary equipment and supplies to facilitate patient care
- Assure room readiness for incoming patients
- Check designated equipment for proper functioning
- Count instruments and sterile trays sent and received from SPD
- Stock and remove linen from patient rooms
- Set up and break down delivery tables
- Participate in staff meetings and quality improvement activities
- Participate in daily, weekly, and monthly quality control activities
- Participate in the orientation of new staff
- Perform related duties as assigned
- CNA certification or currently enrolled in a nursing program with basic clinical rotations completed
- CPR recognition by the American Heart Association (BLS for Healthcare Providers)
- Minimum of 90% correct on annual mandatory Health and Safety Training quizzes
- Unit-based recognition for Capillary Blood Glucose Monitoring
- High school diploma required; one year of college or nursing education or equivalent experience preferred
- Previous experience in a healthcare setting preferred, with a demonstrated ability to relate to patients, family, nursing, and medical staff
- Physical demands required for this role include lifting/carrying up to 50 pounds and pushing/pulling forces up to 50 pounds
