Position Overview
The University of Michigan is seeking a Senior Accountant to join our dynamic team. This role is pivotal in supporting the financial operations of the Athletic Department, ensuring accuracy and compliance in all financial activities.

Key Responsibilities
The Senior Accountant will be responsible for:

  • Assisting with the month-end, quarterly, and annual financial closing processes, including reconciliations for operating funds.
  • Conducting various financial analyses and processing journal entries related to complex financial statement line items.
  • Monitoring and enhancing essential Business Office procedures, policies, and internal controls.
  • Preparing financial reports required by various stakeholders, including the Athletic Department Leadership Team and regulatory agencies.
  • Participating in external financial audits and contributing to the development of the annual operating budget.

Financial Reporting and Analysis
The role involves preparing general ledger reconciliations and financial analyses for various revenue streams, including ticket sales, concessions, and other operational revenues. The Senior Accountant will also assist in preparing external financial statements and documentation for compliance with regulatory requirements.

Internal Controls and Compliance
Key duties include performing internal control procedures, preparing the University's Gap Analysis, and ensuring adherence to accounting policies and procedures. The Senior Accountant will play a critical role in the month-end and year-end financial close processes to guarantee accuracy and completeness.

Budget Management
This position will assist in the development and monitoring of the annual operating budget, including strategy discussions, communication with various departments, and presentation of budget templates.

Qualifications
Applicants should possess:

  • A Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
  • A minimum of 4 years of relevant experience in a public accounting firm or a large organization.
  • Strong technical knowledge of GAAP accounting and financial reporting.
  • Experience with automated financial systems and proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Excellent analytical skills and the ability to manage multiple projects in a fast-paced environment.

Preferred Qualifications
Preferred candidates will have CPA certification and experience in intercollegiate athletics or a university setting. Familiarity with GASB accounting and PeopleSoft general ledger software is also advantageous.
