Position Overview:
The Laboratory Animal Care Specialist is responsible for executing a variety of tasks that require a keen understanding of established protocols and the ability to adapt to unique situations. This role is essential in maintaining the health and well-being of laboratory animals.
Key Responsibilities:- Conduct routine care for a diverse range of animal species, including but not limited to nonhuman primates, canines, porcine, rabbits, guinea pigs, rodents, and aquatic animals.
- Maintain accurate records of animal health, including observations of physical condition, dietary intake, and environmental conditions.
- Administer injections and perform clinical procedures as directed by supervisory personnel.
- Facilitate exercise and provide environmental enrichment to enhance the welfare of the animals.
- Train and guide new staff and trainees in proper animal care techniques and laboratory procedures.
- Adhere to good laboratory practices and maintain a clean and safe working environment in compliance with departmental protocols.
- Work under specialized conditions, utilizing advanced caging systems and isolation units while following strict aseptic techniques.
- Assist in breeding programs and maintain animal colonies, including monitoring health and performing necessary data collection.
- Conduct routine health checks and assist with the collection of clinical samples under supervision.
- Observe animal behavior closely to identify any signs of distress or health issues and report findings to supervisors.
- Prepare and distribute appropriate food and ensure proper feeding schedules are followed.
- Monitor and adjust environmental conditions as necessary, including maintaining equipment and cleaning facilities.
- Perform minor maintenance on laboratory equipment and assist in workflow management.
- Ensure that all supplies are stocked and readily available for daily operations.
- Support veterinary staff in administering treatments and performing health care procedures.
- Collaborate with team members to achieve departmental objectives and maintain high standards of animal care.
- Engage in continuous learning and development to enhance skills and knowledge in laboratory animal care.
- High school diploma or equivalent, with AALAS certification at the ALAT level or higher preferred.
- Ability to perform moderate physical tasks, including lifting and moving equipment and animals.
- Medical screening is required to ensure suitability for the work environment.
- Willingness to work in conditions that may involve exposure to biohazards and other challenging environments.
