Role Summary:
Under the general oversight of the NICU Respiratory Therapy Supervisor, the NICU Respiratory Care Specialist is responsible for delivering critical life-support services, resuscitation, monitoring, and administering various medical gas therapies to patients. This role involves assisting patients across all age groups with both acute and chronic conditions, facilitating their return to a productive lifestyle through education and the application of diverse therapeutic techniques.
The specialist will conduct both invasive and non-invasive diagnostic assessments for patients in Intensive Care and General Practice Units. Effective communication with patients, colleagues, physicians, and other healthcare professionals is essential to address patient care needs adequately. Comprehensive documentation of all patient care activities is required.
Key Responsibilities:
- Conduct thorough patient assessments, develop care plans, and collaborate with healthcare team members. Patient care constitutes 100% of work hours.
- Delegate appropriate patient care tasks to support staff, including Respiratory Therapists and students, ensuring effective communication and guidance.
- Engage with colleagues and other professionals, including physicians and nurses, to ensure optimal patient care and actively participate in daily bedside rounds.
- Uphold high standards of clinical excellence in accordance with departmental policies.
- Demonstrate proficiency in various departmental specialties, clinical areas, and life support equipment, as assigned. Exhibit competency in special procedures and protocols.
- Administer therapeutic modalities as prescribed by physicians or established protocols, determining the most effective therapy modes to ensure patient safety and benefit.
- Administer and monitor medical gases as per physician orders and established protocols, utilizing appropriate delivery devices.
- Evaluate the pulmonary status of patients, communicate clinical findings to physicians, and recommend suitable therapies. Explain procedures and equipment to patients clearly.
- Participate in cardiopulmonary resuscitation, providing basic life support and assessing patient responses to clinical interventions.
- Collect and analyze arterial and capillary blood samples, verifying and interpreting results, and documenting findings for physician communication.
- Perform specific duties as assigned, which may include equipment maintenance, cleaning, and testing.

Qualifications:
- Graduation from an accredited Respiratory Therapist program.
- Associate's degree from an accredited Respiratory Therapist Educational Program.
- Current Respiratory Therapist License in the state of practice.
- Successful completion of the National Board of Respiratory Care registration examination.
- Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) credentials.
- Active Florida RRT License is required.
- Minimum of 3 years of experience in PICU/NICU settings.
- BLS certification required; ACLS, PALS, and/or NRP must be obtained within three months of hire.
