Job Description:

The Student Success Advisor will provide proactive, holistic, and completion-driven academic advising and student success services for primarily first-year, sophomore, and undeclared students at SUNY Polytechnic Institute.

This individual will be responsible for utilizing best practices in individual and group meetings with students to support their academic and personal development, responding holistically to academic alerts regarding students, utilizing technology, and conducting programming for student success.

Depending on experience, interest, and ability, the Student Success Advisor will focus on one or several student cohorts (specific degree programs, re-admitted students, transfer students, and/or students in academic recovery).

They will work collaboratively with campus partners, including faculty academic advisors, to ensure students are provided with academic and co-curricular experiences to support ongoing engagement and academic persistence, while navigating their college experience.

This is a 12-month position that may require evening and weekend hours depending on focus area and need.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Assist new students with their transition to SUNY Polytechnic Institute and advise students on personal and academic development through individualized meetings.
  • Assist students with course selection and the registration process primarily in the first year.
  • Prepare structured schedules for incoming first-year students and advise students on options through in-person, telephone, and virtual meetings.
  • In collaboration with faculty advisors, explain academic program requirements, prerequisites, and academic policies.
  • Assist students in understanding academic progress and rate of degree completion to inform student success recommendations and maintain good academic standing.
  • Collaborate with faculty advisors and campus offices to enhance persistence efforts, including the Registrars, Financial Aid, Wellness Center, Admissions, EOP, ACE, Student Accessibility Services, CARE team, among others.
  • Refer students to related offices (wellness, student accessibility services, CARE, career planning, etc.) as appropriate.
  • Foster student agency through proactive advising practices that encourage self-efficacy, self-advocacy, and accountability.
  • Assist students with academic major and minor exploration, academic petitions related to requests for adjustment to curriculum requirements, and educate students on institutional policies, processes, and forms.
  • In collaboration with academic departments, maintain an understanding of degree requirements and sequencing to degree completion.
  • Support academic recovery initiatives for students on Academic Warning and Academic Dismissal.
  • Provide a holistic, case management approach to assigned student cohort(s).
  • Work as part of the Student Academic Success office team to support learning services, including student testing, subject tutoring, and academic success programming.
  • Create clear and concise notes, accurately documenting all student interactions in the designated technology platform. Maintain accurate records.
  • Review and respond timely to faculty reports, such as academic alerts, mid-term grades, and student progress updates.
  • Utilizing SUNY Polytechnic Institute's prescribed software, work collaboratively with academic support colleagues and faculty advisors to maintain regular communications with advisees to support engagement and persistence.
  • Work with all necessary systems related to job duties (i.e. Microsoft Office suite, Banner, D2L, DegreeWorks, Slate, and any emerging platforms).
  • Utilize data to proactively communicate to students of concern, including those with incomplete grades and Excelsior Scholarship credit tracking, among others.
  • Assist with the collection and reporting of metrics to the Director of Student Academic Success & Advising as requested.
  • Utilize technology platforms to analyze data to improve workflow, efficiency, and effectiveness.
  • In conjunction with best practices, develop, update, deliver, and assess a variety of academic and non-academic related workshops for students on topics such as: academic major information, goal setting, time management, study skills, etc.
  • to support student development and persistence. May partner with specific academic departments for programming and resource development.
  • As appropriate, participate in regional, state, and national advising professional development SUNY Polytechnic Institute college committees, and other projects as assigned.
Requirements:

Bachelor's degree from a college or university accredited by the US Department of Education or internationally recognized accrediting organization and a minimum of three years relevant experience in college student development, education, psychology, counseling, social work, or related field; or a Master's degree from a college or university accredited by the US Department of Education or internationally recognized accrediting organization and a minimum of one year relevant experience in college student development, education, psychology, counseling, social work, or related field.

Knowledge of characteristics of college students and an understanding of multicultural differences.

Knowledge of advising best practices and current advising/student development research. Broad higher education knowledge including use of effective student success strategies.

Ability to effectively and professionally interact and communicate, with a diverse community of students, faculty, staff, and external partners.

Knowledge of information technology such as Brightspace/D2L, BANNER, and Degree Works or other degree tracking software.

Knowledge of best practices and standards as outlined by National Academic Advising Association (NACADA).
