General Overview of Responsibilities:

The Director is responsible for providing strategic leadership, oversight, and management of the Office of Grants and Sponsored Programs. Leveraging extensive experience in the complete grant lifecycle, the Director will collaborate with various stakeholders within the academic community, particularly faculty across diverse disciplines, to secure funding from local, state, and federal sources that align with the institution's mission and strategic goals. The Director, supported by their team, will manage the entire funding process, including pre-award, proposal submission, and post-award management. In the pre-award phase, their expertise will assist in identifying grant opportunities where the institution is well-positioned to succeed; additionally, they will facilitate the development and writing of proposals for these funding opportunities. The Director will serve as the institutional representative for proposal submissions relevant to the Office of Grants and Sponsored Programs. In the post-award phase, the Director, with team support, will work closely with principal investigators to ensure effective execution of award components; ensure compliance with all applicable regulations, policies, and laws governing fund expenditures; and guarantee timely reporting to funding agencies. The Director will also collaborate with colleagues in Institutional Advancement to assist in securing funding types outside the Office's direct oversight.

Essential:
  • Formulate and execute strategic plans to enhance the Office's effectiveness, generate new funding sources, attract premier sponsors, and bolster the University's proposal writing and grants management capabilities.
  • Establish and maintain productive relationships with public and private program offices, congressional offices, and local, state, and federal agencies involved in funding review and approval.
  • Collaborate with principal investigators and key stakeholders to highlight faculty research innovations.
  • Ensure comprehensive planning, submission, implementation, and reporting for funding opportunities that align with the institution's mission and strategic objectives.
  • Monitor the progress of projects supported by funding awards and provide timely updates to funding sources through regular progress reports as required.
  • Work in conjunction with Finance department colleagues to ensure adherence to all relevant regulations, policies, and laws governing fund expenditures.
  • Oversee regular evaluations of the Office of Grants and Sponsored Programs and its associated functions.
  • Collaborate to identify areas for improvement within the Office and develop plans to implement enhancements, including revisions to University policies and resources essential for effective grants management.
  • Mentor and acknowledge staff within the Office of Grants and Sponsored Programs and promote collaborative efforts across University divisions, particularly with faculty from all academic areas.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.


Qualifications:
Required:
  • Master's degree or equivalent professional qualifications and achievements.
  • Significant experience in sponsored research administration in progressively responsible leadership roles.
  • Expertise in developing and delivering presentations, reports, and communication materials for diverse executive, corporate, and community stakeholders.
  • Strong ability to represent the institution effectively.
  • Well-developed supervisory and leadership skills, including intercultural competencies for collaboration within a diverse educational environment.
  • Robust problem-solving abilities.
  • Proficiency in office technology.

Preferred:
  • Experience in higher education settings.
  • Experience in unionized environments.

Salary:

Salary for current employees and individuals currently working for the state must be calculated in accordance with collective bargaining agreements and state policies. Job specifications can be found on the relevant Department of Higher Education webpage.
