Job Description

The Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU) at the University of Maryland Medical System is a 24-bed unit that provides care to patients undergoing various surgical services. As an Advanced Practice Provider (APP) in this unit, you will be part of a team of 11 APPs who work collaboratively with attending physicians and other healthcare professionals to ensure high-quality patient care.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Clinical Assessment and Decision-Making: You will be responsible for conducting comprehensive history and physical assessments, ordering and interpreting diagnostic tests, and establishing medical diagnoses based on your findings.
  2. Treatment Planning and Implementation: You will design, order, and document treatment plans, including prescriptions of medications, and initiate protocols and clinical pathways as needed.
  3. Patient Education and Communication: You will educate patients and their families about their treatment plans, disease processes, and medication regimens, and provide primary, secondary, and tertiary preventive care services.
  4. Collaboration and Teamwork: You will work collaboratively with attending physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to ensure seamless care coordination and communication.
Requirements
  • Current Maryland license in good standing as a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant
  • National Certification within respective area of responsibility (preferred)
  • NPI, DEA, and CDS required
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's of Science in Nursing
  • 2 years of experience as a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant providing direct care to patients in a surgical program setting
Working Conditions
  • Lifting and/or carrying objects weighing 11 to 20 pounds
  • Pushing and/or pulling non-motorized equipment weighing over 50 pounds
  • Stooping and bending
  • Grasping and fine manipulation with hands
  • Using a keyboard to interact with computer systems
  • Proofreading and/or reviewing documents
  • Walking for extended periods of time
  • Ability to communicate verbally
  • Ability to hear
  • Exposure to hazardous materials requiring the use of protective dress
