Position Overview

Role Summary

This position is essential for the upkeep of our pulp and paper production machinery. The technician plays a crucial role in ensuring the seamless operation of our manufacturing processes.

The role necessitates proficiency in maintenance repairs and troubleshooting for equipment such as pumps, motors, bearings, agitators, and mechanical drives.

Experience in pipefitting, welding, rigging, equipment alignment, hydraulics, and familiarity with preventive maintenance systems aimed at enhancing machine reliability is highly valued.

This position is integral to the preventative and predictive maintenance initiatives for manufacturing machinery. Technicians are expected to strictly follow all safety and compliance protocols established by the organization.

Key Responsibilities

  • Maintains machinery and mechanical systems by fulfilling preventive maintenance tasks on engines, motors, pneumatic tools, conveyor systems, and production equipment; adhering to diagrams, operational manuals, manufacturer instructions, and engineering specifications; diagnosing malfunctions;
  • Identifies issues by observing mechanical devices in operation; listening for irregularities; utilizing precision measuring and testing tools including laser alignment and torque wrenches;
  • Dismantles devices to remove defective components; employing hoists, cranes, and hand and power tools; assessing the condition of parts;
  • Evaluates changes in dimensional specifications of components by inspecting used parts; utilizing measuring instruments such as calipers and micrometers;
  • Adjusts operational parts of devices and control instruments using hand tools and levels;
  • Minimizes downtime by informing production staff of routine preventive maintenance practices; overseeing compliance;
  • Fabricates replacement parts using machine shop tools and equipment;
  • Optimizes maintenance resources by utilizing equipment and supplies effectively;
  • Provides mechanical maintenance insights by addressing inquiries and requests;
  • Compiles mechanical maintenance reports by gathering, analyzing, and summarizing data and trends;
  • Ensures a safe and organized work environment by adhering to established procedures and regulations;
  • Contributes to enhancing Pixelle's safety culture.

Qualifications

Essential Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Completion of a State certified Apprenticeship program in Mechanical (Millwright, Welder, Machinist, Mechanic), a 2-year Mechanical technical degree with 2 years of relevant experience, or a Mechanical Vocational school certificate (Millwright, Welder, Machinist, Mechanic) with 3 years of applicable experience;
  • Work Keys Assessment in Reading, Locating Information, and Math;
  • Ability to successfully complete written and hands-on assessments;
  • Proficient in computer usage and possesses strong communication skills;
  • Self-driven, capable of working independently;
  • Ability to lift up to 100lbs, climb ladders and stairs, and stand for extended periods with or without reasonable accommodation;
  • Willingness to work various shifts, including overtime, weekends, and holidays as necessary;
  • Ability to interpret maintenance schematics and blueprints;
  • Willingness to work in a high-volume manufacturing environment, including areas that may be greasy, noisy, non-air conditioned, and subject to hot, humid, wet, or dusty conditions;
  • Commitment to safety, including the use of appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in welding (Arc, TIG, and wire feed) is preferred, with certification being an advantage;
  • Willingness to learn and apply additional maintenance skills such as pipefitting and machining;
  • Familiarity with equipment used in pulp and paperboard operations, including pumps, gearboxes, bearings, and motors;
  • Mechanical experience in an industrial setting is required;
  • Ability to collaborate effectively in a team environment to safely complete tasks with minimal supervision;
  • Proficient in computer systems, networks, and electronic information management, including Microsoft Office.
