Position Overview

Job Title: Chinese Tutor/Assistant

Classification: Student Employee (non-exempt)

Position Duration: As per Employment Authorization

Supervisor: Director of the Chinese Program

Compensation: Standard Hourly Rate

Position Purpose:
The primary objective of this role is to provide support to faculty members in the Asian Studies department. Responsibilities may include assisting in both teaching and research activities.

Key Skills:
  • Effective communication skills in both English and Mandarin (spoken and written);
  • Attention to detail and strong organizational abilities;
  • Punctuality and reliability;
  • Commitment to confidentiality.
Responsibilities:
  • Collaborate with faculty members within the Chinese program;
  • Facilitate tutoring sessions for students enrolled in Chinese courses;
  • Assist in evaluating student assignments and quizzes;
  • Support faculty in organizing Chinese cultural events and activities;
  • Help prepare educational materials and projects as directed.
Qualifications:
Preference will be given to candidates majoring in Chinese or Asian Studies, particularly those with native or near-native proficiency in Mandarin.

Minimum Requirements:
  • Completion of Chinese 232 with a grade of A- or higher, or equivalent native proficiency;
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and work independently;
  • Strong interpersonal and Mandarin language skills;
  • Punctuality in providing feedback and attending meetings;
  • Passion for promoting and teaching Chinese language and culture.
