Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Special Education Assistant to join our team at Albuquerque Public Schools. As a Special Education Assistant, you will play a vital role in supporting the instructional program and providing assistance to certified staff in delivering high-quality education to students with special needs.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist certified staff in providing individualized support to students with special needs, including reinforcing material introduced by the teacher and developing students' language and behavior.
  • Collect, prepare, and arrange resource materials for use by certified personnel, and operate support equipment as needed.
  • Maintain accurate classroom records, prepare reports, and score tests, while also managing supplies and classroom equipment.
  • Monitor student activities in classrooms, school grounds, and other areas, and provide support for non-instructional classroom duties.
  • Participate in teacher-parent conferences and meetings, and reinforce the implementation of IEP goals using similar emphasis and techniques as the classroom teacher.
  • Train students in self-help skills, including eating, toileting, hygiene, behavior management, and academic skills.
  • Assist with custodial skills of students, including lifting, positioning, and adaptive equipment maintenance.
Requirements
  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Effective communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Flexibility, organization, decision-making, and problem-solving skills.
  • Interpersonal skills with diverse populations.
  • Knowledge of APS community, computer systems, financial, and legal requirements.
  • Ability to meet deadlines, work on multiple projects, and coordinate the work of others.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with educational equipment preferred.
