Job Summary

We are seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Custodian (Part-Time) to join our team at The Salvation Army Central Territory. As a Custodian, you will be responsible for maintaining the highest level of cleanliness and organization in our facilities.

Key Responsibilities
  • Clean and maintain assigned areas, including hallways, common areas, bathrooms, showers, dorms, and offices.
  • Empty and change trash cans, and dispose of all trash, including broken furniture and litter.
  • Proactively clean all areas, including desks, tables, sinks, countertops, and other surfaces.
  • Put items in their correct places, including tables, chairs, towels, laundry bins, and garbage cans.
  • Change shower curtains as needed or when requested.
  • Supervise volunteers assigned to assist with job duties.
  • Consult with supervisors on proper use of cleaning supplies, daily work assignments, and Harbor Light Policies and Procedures.
  • Maintain a positive work atmosphere by behaving and communicating in a manner that fosters good relationships with volunteers, coworkers, and supervisors.
  • Support the mission of The Salvation Army by treating every client and colleague with individual respect and dignity, and without discrimination of any kind.
Requirements
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Ability to take directions and adapt to a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to stand on feet all day and lift 50 pounds.
  • Preferred six (6) months of practical work experience in high volume housekeeping/janitorial experience.
  • Ability to demonstrate sensitivity to issues of homelessness, chemical addiction, and unemployment, racial and cultural diversity.
  • Ability to possess an aptitude in oral communications.
  • Ability to be trustworthy, especially in confidential matters.
  • Ability to pass background checks, including a MVR if driving required and pre-employment drug test.
Working Conditions

The duties and responsibilities of this position cannot be performed from home. There are normally no hazardous or significantly unpleasant physical working conditions, with the exception of occasional emotional distress or turmoil due to varying situations with and between staff and/or clients.

Physical Demands
  • Able to hear average or normal conversations and receive ordinary information.
  • Movements frequently and regularly required using the majority of the body.
  • Exerts up to 30 pounds of force occasionally.
  • Talking, especially where one must frequently convey detailed or important instructions, information, and ideas accurately, loudly, or quickly.
  • Ability to travel by personal vehicle, organization vehicle, or other mode of travel as required.
Language and Mathematics Skills
  • Ability to fluently speak, read, and write in English.
  • Ability to perform basic math skills, addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, and percentages.
  • Ability to prepare budgets.
Reasoning and Problem-Solving Skills
  • Ability to deal with a variety of variables under only limited standardization.
  • Able to interpret various instructions.
