Job Summary:

As a key member of the Kaiser Permanente team, the Sterile Processing Technician II plays a vital role in ensuring the highest standards of infection control and quality assurance in the Sterile Processing Department. Under direct/indirect supervision, this individual will follow established policies and procedures to collect, clean, decontaminate, disinfect, and/or sterilize surgical instruments, trays, and packs, reusable medical devices, and patient care equipment for inpatient Nursing and Medical Office departments.


Key Responsibilities:
  • Infection Control: Adhere to standard precautions, hand washing requirements, and workflow patterns to maintain a safe and sterile environment.
  • Quality Assurance Monitoring: Validate and maintain event-related protocols, disinfection and/or sterilization load parameters, inventory check sheets, and equipment monitoring records.
  • Documentation: Accurately document and maintain daily records of all QA and sterilization functions, adhering to regulatory agency and Infection Control standards.
  • Policies and Procedures: Adhere to Organizational and Departmental policies and procedures.
  • Staff Development: Participate in department employee orientation, meetings, and employee evaluation and competency programs, maintaining current Sterile Processing Technician Certification.
  • Decontamination Skills: Wear personal protective equipment, inspect, disassemble, sort, clean, and process reusable instrumentation and equipment, selecting and operating specialized cleaning equipment.
  • Instrumentation Assembly: Identify, inspect, and assemble all general and specialty instruments, various power equipment, laser, and endoscopic instruments per specifications and manufacturer recommendations.
  • Preparation and Packaging: Select and prepare packaging materials for the sterilization of reusable instrumentation, following manufacturer guidelines.
  • Principles of Sterilization: Select appropriate methods of sterilization, maintaining accurate sterilization records, and verifying that sterilization parameters have been met before distribution of loads.
  • Equipment and Supply Management: Collect, clean, check, distribute, and track patient care equipment, ordering patient care equipment and inventory assigned supply areas for replenishment.
  • Workplace Safety: Demonstrate awareness of personal and work area safety at all times, complying with facility safety policies and procedures, including those for bloodborne pathogens and communicable diseases.
  • Professionalism: Demonstrate effective written and oral communication skills, actively supporting and contributing to teamwork in the workplace, taking responsibility and being accountable for own professional work ethics.

Basic Qualifications:
Experience
  • One year experience in instrument processing, with knowledge of Medical Terminology, various types of reusable surgical instrumentation, and Sterile Processing departmental equipment.
  • Ability to read and comprehend complex instructions, correspondence, and memos, and to write simple correspondence.
  • Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other incumbents of the organization.
Education
  • High School Diploma/GED.
