Position Overview

Key Responsibilities
As a Physical Scientist at the Nevada Water Science Center, your responsibilities will encompass:
- Supporting senior scientists in executing scientific research.
- Gathering geological and hydrological information.
- Aiding in the development of scientific documentation.
- Overseeing scientific data management and databases.
- Functioning as an incidental driver of a motor vehicle.
Physical Requirements
The role demands a degree of physical exertion, which may include extended periods of standing in laboratory settings. Fieldwork will require outdoor activities involving significant walking and navigating rough or mountainous terrain. Some tasks may necessitate lifting heavy items exceeding 50 pounds and maneuvering in confined spaces.
Work Environment
Laboratory work may involve exposure to dust, hazardous chemicals, mechanical and electrical risks, and noise. Adherence to safety protocols is essential, including the use of protective gear such as lab coats, safety goggles, dust masks, and gloves. Field assignments may expose you to extreme weather conditions and potential hazards from wildlife.

Essential Qualifications:

Educational Requirements
Basic Education Requirement: Candidates must fulfill one of the following criteria:
- Completion of a four-year degree in physical science, engineering, or mathematics with at least 24 semester hours in physical science or related fields.
- A combination of education and experience equivalent to the above, totaling four years, including 24 semester hours in relevant subjects.
For GS-07 Level:
Candidates must meet one of the following:
- One year of graduate-level education in physical science or a related field.
- Superior Academic Achievement based on undergraduate studies.
- One year of relevant professional experience equivalent to the GS-5 level.
- A combination of graduate education and professional experience.
For GS-09 Level:
Candidates must meet one of the following:
- Two years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a master's degree in physical science or a related field.
- One year of relevant professional experience equivalent to the GS-7 level.
- A combination of advanced graduate education and professional experience.
All candidates must meet the qualifications and eligibility criteria by the closing date of the announcement.
