Surgical Pathology Specialist

We are seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented individual to join our team as a Pathologists' Assistant Surgical Grossing Room Specialist at Brigham & Women's Hospital (BWH).
The successful candidate will be responsible for performing a wide range of tasks in the processing of surgical pathology specimens, including gross description and dissection, and ensuring accurate and timely completion of gross description sections of surgical pathology reports.
Key responsibilities will include:
- Acting independently under the supervision of the Technical Supervisor, Surgical Pathology, to perform tasks in processing of surgical pathology specimens.
- Providing instruction to resident trainees and Pathologists' Assistant student interns on gross anatomy, specimen orientation, tissue selection, cryotomy, and staining for stat intraoperative diagnosis by the pathologist.
- Performing other technical and administrative tasks in the laboratory, including gross description and dissection of surgical pathology specimens, and ensuring correct patient labeling of all materials received.
- Photographing and x-raying specimens as needed for diagnostic study, research, and clinical studies.
- Dictating data as necessary for autopsy reports, and ensuring accurate and timely completion of gross description sections of autopsy reports.
- Obtaining biological specimens for further analysis at autopsy, and ensuring that documents for autopsy are properly completed in accordance with hospital policy and state law.
- Assisting senior staff in the preparation of case materials or photographic material for research, conferences, or special studies.
- Entering data of patient medical record information into the computer, assigning surgical pathology accession numbers, editing and confirming patient charge information, using the laboratory information system.
- Working with senior staff and other departmental personnel as necessary, as well as other clinical staff in the hospital.
- Providing Saturday coverage for grossing surgical specimens as necessary, and participating in resident teaching conferences.
- Assisting in keeping the work area clean, organized, and in compliance with all safety regulations.
- Maintaining established department policies, procedures, and objectives, including quality assurance, safety, environmental, and infection control.
- Following all Joint Commission Patient Safety Goals and related BWH Laboratory and Hospital Policies.
Requirements for the position include a Master's Degree from a NAACLS-accredited and AAPA-approved Pathologists' Assistant Training Program, and recent graduates must obtain PA(ASCP) certification within 1 calendar year from date of training program completion. Two or more years of experience in an academic setting is highly desired.
