PRIMARY PURPOSE:
The primary objective of this role is to assist the special education teacher in implementing the daily training programs for students with special needs. Responsibilities may include providing support with feeding, lifting, and individualized care, as well as aiding in both instructional and non-instructional activities, including student management.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education:
High school diploma or GED, Valid Texas Educational Aide Certificate, PAC Test (No Child Left Behind) / 48 College Hours, Bilingual Test (if applicable)
Special Knowledge / Skills:
Ability to engage with special needs students, work independently without direct supervision, and comprehend and execute requirements outlined in an Individualized Education Plan (I.E.P.).
Ability to manage students with fairness and firmness, restrain disruptive behavior, work effectively in stressful situations, and maintain confidentiality. Previous experience working with children is preferred.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
- Assist the teacher with routine classroom management tasks.
- Help prepare instructional materials.
- Maintain the classroom environment and supplies.
- Support students with homework and test preparation.
- Modify assignments and tests as needed.
- Keep accurate records and files for each student.
- Communicate students' needs to faculty and staff.
- Ensure a safe environment for all students and staff.
- Implement behavior management plans for students.
- Assist with loading and unloading students from school buses.
- Participate in physical education activities.
- Attend to individual hygiene needs of students.
- Assist students with feeding or provide support as necessary.
- Lift, move, and position students in various settings.
- Be aware of students' medical concerns.
- Escort students to different locations within the school.
- Monitor students during various activities throughout the school day.
- Work with any student as determined by their I.E.P.
- File documents in students' folders.
- Help orient students to their class schedules each semester.
- Obtain necessary textbooks for different programs.
- Perform additional duties as assigned by the special education teacher or principal.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Mental Demands:
Ability to communicate effectively (both verbal and written), maintain emotional control under stress, interpret policies and procedures, and coordinate district functions.
Physical Demands / Environmental Factors:
Ability to see at various distances, lift and carry up to 50 lbs, push or pull up to 100 lbs, maneuver mobility aids, physically restrain students when necessary, and stand for extended periods. Ability to perform tasks such as diaper changing, feeding, and assisting with life skills.
