Department Overview:
The Med/Surgery Unit is a 33-bed inpatient area that caters to post-surgical patients, including 16 telemetry beds.
Our team collaborates with leading physicians and surgeons to deliver over 19 specialty services for general, orthopedic, urologic, and medical patients.
We foster a culture dedicated to high-quality patient care and teamwork within our department and across support services.
Job Objectives:
Assume direct responsibility and accountability for the nursing care of all assigned patients.
Responsibilities:
- Assess and identify the physiological and psycho-social needs of patients.
- Develop individualized nursing care plans with measurable outcomes.
- Ensure nursing care plans align with medical directives and adhere to current standards of practice.
- Ensure compliance with hospital and departmental policies, procedures, and regulations.
- Implement infection control principles and collaborate with infection control personnel to safeguard patients, staff, and visitors.
- Participate in the orientation of new staff members.
- Assist clinical instructors in providing educational experiences for nursing students.
- Document and review each assigned patient's care plan at least every 24 hours.
Essential Functions:

Competence:
Must not pose a direct threat to the health or safety of self or others. Must provide safe, efficient, and competent care to the assigned patient population. Demonstrate proficiency in unit-specific functions as outlined in performance standards.
Qualifications:
Education/Knowledge/Skills:
- Graduate of an accredited nursing program.
Knowledge Required:
- Understanding of etiology, pathophysiology, and prognosis for various health conditions;
- Familiarity with the nursing process;
- Knowledge of management processes;
- Awareness of current developments in nursing;
- Understanding of hospital functions, policies, procedures, and regulations as they pertain to nursing services.
For staff involved in the care of specific age groups, knowledge of the bio-psychosocial needs of adult, geriatric, and pediatric patients is essential. Special knowledge is required regarding the growth and development needs of pediatric and geriatric patients where applicable.
Experience:
Previous experience in the specialty department is preferred.
Licensure/Certifications:
- Must hold a current Registered Nurse license from the Tennessee Board of Nursing or possess a temporary permit to practice.
- Must be certified (or scheduled for certification or recertification training according to departmental guidelines) in life support programs specific to the unit (CPR, ACLS, NALS).
