Job Summary:

As a Surgical Technologist I at Kaiser Permanente, you will play a vital role in the surgical team by preparing and organizing the operating room prior to surgery, selecting and passing instruments during surgical procedures, and maintaining the operating room in aseptic condition following established policies and procedures. You will also assist with patient care during and after surgery, conforming to prescribed policies and procedures regarding aseptic techniques.

Essential Responsibilities:
  • Assist physicians during surgery as a member of the surgical team, passing instruments and supplies as directed, and scrubbing and conforming to sterile technique for each procedure.
  • Assist in draping the patient, providing proper retraction of tissue, and holding retractors as directed by the surgeon.
  • Control hemostasis by applying a Bovie to a clamp at the direction of the surgeon, and assist with sponging, suctioning, and performing sponge, needle/sharp, and instrument counts.
  • Prepare suture for closure of surgical incision, apply proper surgical dressing as directed by the physician, and recognize, respond to, and assist in acute emergency situations following established procedures and policies.
  • Hold and position video cameras under the direction of the surgeon, check surgeons' preference cards, and prepare sterile setups for surgeons.
  • Count with circulating nurses, before they prep the patient, and be accountable for items required for documentation on that procedure.
  • Anticipate the wants of surgeons and keep adequate sutures and supplies ready, keeping Mayo stands and back tables neat and orderly, and making sure there are no loose needles on the field.
  • Confirm all specimens with the surgeon, hand off specimens to the circulator prior to the end of the case or earlier if directed by the surgeon, and take all instruments to the workroom for washing or place in carts to return to SPD.
  • Remove suction bottles, dispose of contaminated instruments, adhere to methods of sterilization, disinfecting, antisepsis, and aseptic techniques, and package, store, and dispense surgery supplies.
  • Principals for maintaining environmental safety, including handling surgical specimens and body fluids, required counts, electrical and radiation hazards, fire safety, drains, tubes, and collection mechanisms, catheters, modes of transportation to and from the O.R., including ICU transport, patient care, and emergency procedures, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, and assist surgeons with surgical procedures in other patient areas according to patient needs.
Basic Qualifications:
  • One (1) year of operating room or military equivalent experience in a scrub role within the last two (2) years or recent completion of an operating room training program.
  • Per the National Agreement, current KP Coalition employees have this experience requirement waived.
  • Surgical Technologist Certificate within six (6) months of hire from the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting or National Center for Competency Testing Certificate - Technologist in Surgery within 6 months of hire from the National Center for Competency Testing.
  • Basic Life Support.
Additional Requirements:
  • Ability to scrub all types of surgical cases except open heart.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Prior experience as a First Assistant preferred.
