Position Overview

The Athletic Facilities Maintenance Technician plays a crucial role in ensuring the optimal condition and functionality of Princeton University's sports venues. This includes a variety of facilities such as natural grass fields, synthetic turf areas, swimming pools, basketball and volleyball courts, indoor and outdoor tennis courts, tracks, an ice rink, squash courts, and strength training facilities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform routine maintenance on natural grass fields, including mowing, fertilization, seeding, aeration, and irrigation management.
  • Oversee the upkeep of artificial turf fields through grooming, repairs, and cleaning.
  • Maintain cleanliness and order in outdoor spaces and common areas, including landscaping and litter removal.
  • Ensure indoor facilities are kept clean through regular sweeping, mopping, and trash disposal.
  • Manage the ice rink operations, including the use of ice resurfacing equipment and routine maintenance checks.
  • Conduct maintenance on swimming pools and fountains as required.
  • Handle snow and ice removal around athletic venues using both manual tools and machinery.
  • Set up and dismantle equipment for special events, including bleachers and scorekeeping areas.
  • Assist in the movement of equipment and supplies across various athletic venues.
  • Secure facilities and equipment at the end of shifts as necessary.
  • Perform minor repairs and maintenance tasks on equipment and facilities.
  • Troubleshoot and fix issues with equipment such as scoreboards and public address systems.
  • Operate and maintain various machinery, including mowers and forklifts.
  • Develop a comprehensive understanding of the requirements for the 38 varsity sports and numerous club and intramural programs utilizing the facilities.
  • Provide exceptional customer service by acting as a liaison for coaches, staff, and external groups.
  • Collaborate with external contractors and university trades for facility upkeep.

Qualifications

  • High School diploma or GED is required.
  • Dependability and flexibility are essential, as the schedule may vary seasonally.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license.
  • Ability to work independently and make decisions with minimal supervision.
  • Familiarity with electronic and mechanical equipment for minor adjustments.
  • Effective communication skills with diverse groups, including students and staff.
  • Knowledge of NCAA regulations and adherence to compliance standards is necessary.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with hand tools and mechanical systems.
  • Background in small engine repair, carpentry, or basic plumbing.
  • Prior experience in grounds maintenance within an athletic context.
  • Experience in ice rink maintenance and swimming pool operations.
  • Certification as a pesticide applicator is a plus.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stand or walk for extended periods, with physical tasks requiring lifting and carrying.
  • Capability to operate machinery and perform tasks in various environmental conditions.
  • Must be able to work at heights and maintain physical agility.
