Assistant Prosecuting Attorney II

Livingston County is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Assistant Prosecuting Attorney II to join our team. As a key member of our prosecutor's office, you will play a critical role in upholding justice and ensuring the safety of our community.
Job Summary:The Assistant Prosecuting Attorney II will be responsible for performing a wide range of prosecutorial duties, including researching and preparing cases for trial, prosecuting and managing cases in various courts, and providing advice and training to county officials and law enforcement officers. This is a challenging and rewarding role that requires strong analytical and communication skills, as well as the ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment.
Key Responsibilities:- Research and prepare cases for trial, including reviewing evidence, interviewing witnesses, and analyzing complex legal issues.
- Prosecute and manage cases in various courts, including district, family, probate, juvenile, circuit, and appellate courts.
- Provide advice and training to county officials and law enforcement officers on legal matters, including courtroom procedures and protocols.
- Interview and inform witnesses, clients, victims, and other parties regarding cases, legal procedures, and court appearances.
- Coordinate services with other agencies, including law enforcement, medical personnel, social services, and probation officers.
- Assist lower-level attorneys and supervisors with interpreting legal information, courtroom policies and procedures, and preparing cases for trial and court hearings.
- Review and analyze evidence, police reports, medical reports, and child protective service reports to authorize warrants.
- Keep the prosecutor and chief assistant prosecutor apprised of case status and high-profile cases.
- Attend legal conferences and seminars to stay current on legal issues, updates, and strategies.
- Be on call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to provide legal advice to law enforcement, dispatch, and department of health and human services/child protective services, and review search and arrest warrants.
- Prepare written answers and briefs on legal issues raised by defendants before the circuit court, court of appeals, and Michigan supreme court.
- Participate in oral arguments in the circuit court, court of appeals, and Michigan supreme court regarding briefs and issues filed in those courts.
- Perform redactions of protected personal information contained in documents that must be disclosed upon request under the freedom of information act.
- Perform on-call prosecutor duties, including reviewing warrant requests, which may result in authorizing/denying/furthering a warrant request and suggesting bond conditions/bail amounts to the court.
- Juris Doctorate degree and four years of progressively more responsible experience as an assistant prosecuting attorney I, public defender, or private attorney.
- Licensed to practice law in the state of Michigan and a member in good standing with the Michigan bar association.
- Michigan vehicle operator's license.
- Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of state of Michigan criminal and case law, and courtroom procedures.
- Considerable knowledge of performing legal research, reviewing and interpreting evidence, interviewing witnesses, assigning proper charges, preparing and interpreting legal documents, mediation and conflict resolution principles, document production and courtroom presentation, developing legal arguments, and maintaining detailed and accurate records.
- Skill in assembling and analyzing data and preparing comprehensive and accurate reports.
- Skill in effectively communicating ideas and concepts orally and in writing and making presentations in public forums.
- Ability to establish effective working relationships and use good judgment, initiative, and resourcefulness when dealing with county employees, contractors to the county, representatives of other governmental units, professional contacts, elected officials, and the public.
- Ability to assess situations, solve problems, work effectively under stress, within deadlines, and in emergency situations.
- Skill in the use of office equipment and technology, including Microsoft suite applications, software programs utilized by the prosecutor's office, and specialized legal research software.
- Ability to attend meetings scheduled at times other than normal business hours.
- Ability to respond to emergencies or service needs on a 24-hour basis.
- Ability to work with confidential, highly sensitive information.
- Knowledge of court procedures.
- Skill in applying local, state, and federal laws, rules, and regulations to complex fact patterns.
- Skill in developing and presenting persuasive legal arguments.
- Skill in organizing and presenting complex or specialized cases for trial.
- Knowledge of department policies and procedures.
- Knowledge of using Zoom technology for meetings, conferences, and court hearings.

The employee must occasionally lift and/or move objects of light weight. The employee must lift or push/pull objects of up to 15 lbs. without assistance. Accommodation will be made, as needed, for employees required to lift or move objects that exceed this weight.
The typical work environment of this job is a business office or court setting where the noise level is quiet and sometimes moderate.
