POSITION SUMMARY:
This role involves performing protective service duties, ensuring adherence to laws within the correctional facility, maintaining the safety and security of the environment, investigating unlawful activities within the facility, serving legal documents, and safeguarding both inmate and public welfare. Responsibilities include testifying in legal proceedings, maintaining comprehensive records, preparing detailed reports, and executing related tasks as required. This position operates under the moderate oversight of the Corrections Bureau Captain or their appointed representative.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
The following tasks are typical for this role. They are not to be interpreted as exhaustive or exclusive. To succeed in this position, an individual must competently perform each responsibility. Additional duties may be assigned as necessary.
- Execute the service of warrants, summons, subpoenas, and civil process documents as required within the facility; may involve making arrests, utilizing handcuffs and other restraints when necessary.
- Assist fellow law enforcement personnel and agencies with photographic line-ups, intoxication tests, positive identification, and the collection and preservation of digital evidence.
- Utilize computer systems to check criminal histories, warrant statuses during arrests and releases, and facilitate DNA databank collection.
- Initiate and conduct criminal investigations within the facility by preserving, documenting, and presenting evidence; interview victims and witnesses; provide testimony in court. Prepare and maintain various records and reports.
- Ensure proper maintenance of the correctional facility; conduct armed perimeter security inspections of the premises.
- Report any misconduct by inmates or staff to the Jail Administrator or Shift Supervisor on duty; document all significant inmate grievances.
- Monitor the activities of inmates participating in work release programs.
- Supervise inmate work assignments within the facility.
- Process new inmates by taking photographs and fingerprints; safeguard inmates' personal belongings; attend to their needs.
- Handle the booking and release of inmates.
- Maintain accurate criminal record files.
- Log and manage professional visitors entering the facility.
- Distribute meals and collect trays as required.
- As directed by the supervisor, prepare reports, manage fines, and process bonds.
- Respond to department inquiries via phone and assist the public as needed.
- Secure surrounding areas as assigned.
- Ensure safe transportation of inmates for court appearances and related obligations.
- Document court outcomes.
- Assist with court appearances and related judicial activities.
- Record bail bonds and judgments, and make referrals for non-compliance.
- Conduct urine analysis and preliminary breath tests in accordance with relevant legal frameworks.
- Supervise work details as assigned.
- May undertake special tasks and responsibilities as qualified and designated.
- Ability to provide credible testimony in a court setting.
- General understanding of law enforcement practices, procedures, and relevant statutes regarding inmate care and commitment.
- Familiarity with the regulations of the Sheriff's Office; proficiency in the use of firearms, chemical agents, defensive weapons, and vehicle operation.
- Capability to comprehend and execute oral and written instructions and to prepare clear, comprehensive reports.
- Ability to interact courteously, firmly, and tactfully with inmates and the public in high-pressure situations.
- Working knowledge of institutional management practices and philosophies, including inmate care and custody.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
Corrections Officer I:
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Must be at least 18 years of age.
- Completion of 60 college-level credits or an Associate's/Technical Degree or Jail Certification in the State of Wisconsin.
- Must be at least 18 years of age.
Corrections Officer I/II:
- Valid driver's license.
- Jail Certification in the State of Wisconsin must be obtained within one year of hire.
- First Aid and CPR/AED Certification or waiver must be obtained within one year of hire.
- Intoxilyzer and Sobriety Testing Certification or waiver must be obtained within three years of hire.
- Wisconsin Law Enforcement Standards Board Certification preferred.
