Job Summary

The Environmental Services Technician position is located in the Department of Veterans Affairs, Veterans Health Administration, Environmental Management Service, in the Salisbury VA Medical Center.

Responsibilities
  • Assign staff for duties on a daily and project-by-project basis.
  • Coordinate work with supervisors of other services within the assigned area of jurisdiction to ensure patient care and other activities are not interrupted.
  • Clean all patient areas and corridor spaces throughout the medical center, operating rooms, and other assigned areas.
  • Ensure the efficient and economical accomplishment of work assignments of subordinates within established policies and schedules.
  • Plan and schedule daily and weekly assignments, taking into consideration the availability of personnel and equipment to meet established priorities.
  • Train staff to ensure the use of patient-centered care principles in terms of customer service to patients, family members, and personnel.
  • Provide on-the-job training for subordinates and new employees as individual needs dictate.
  • Keep subordinates abreast of proper methods, procedures, and uses of equipment and supplies.
  • Control the use of supplies and equipment to affect cost control within the unit.
  • Conduct in-use testing of equipment and/or supplies, providing feedback in regards to their observations.
  • Ensure all safety regulations and procedures are observed and may on occasion be required to conduct training classes on specific safety issues.
  • Supervise the daily distribution of uniforms and textiles to the designated areas and persons and ensure record keeping is timely and accurate.
  • Approve leave requests for subordinates, counsel employees, and recommend disciplinary action to a higher-level supervisor whenever non-compliance with policy warrants.
  • Make formal appraisals of subordinates' work performance and conduct.
  • Inspect assigned areas to assure the timely accomplishment of employee assignments, sanitation levels are maintained, equipment properly cared for, and that associated housekeeping objectives are accomplished in an expedient and timely manner.
Work Schedule

Candidates must be willing to work weekends, irregular work hours, and extended hours if determined by the needs of the service.

Candidates must also be willing to be placed, detailed, or temporarily assigned to other related services and/or locations, if necessary.

Physical Requirements

The position demands continuous walking, standing, stooping, kneeling, pulling, and pushing.

The work requires the occasional use of heavy powered cleaning equipment (e.g., wall washers, industrial-type buffers) weighing over 50 pounds.

The duties necessitate considerable dexterity, hand, foot, and eye coordination, and concentration as well as visual acuity to see dirt, dust, and debris.
