Position Overview
The Campus Safety & Security Department is committed to safeguarding the rights of the university community to a secure environment through exceptional and professional service. The primary role of the Campus Safety Officer involves the protection of individuals and property within the university's premises.
Key Responsibilities
- Implement community policing initiatives within the department.
- Conduct preliminary investigations of reported incidents and crimes, making arrests when necessary, and prepare detailed reports.
- Enforce university regulations and applicable state laws on campus.
- Investigate traffic incidents occurring on campus and document findings.
- Respond to medical emergencies and disasters, providing first aid or CPR/AED as required.
- Assist in student safety training, including fire drills and emergency preparedness.
- React promptly to alarm activations, including panic, fire, and burglary alarms.
- Maintain accurate logs and documentation of activities.
- Monitor surveillance systems to ensure campus safety.
- Manage the entry of authorized personnel and visitors.
- Secure and unlock facilities as directed.
- Take on additional responsibilities as assigned by supervisors.
Qualifications
To excel in this role, candidates must meet the following requirements:
- Exemplary moral character with no felony or significant misdemeanor convictions.
- Minimum age of 21 at the time of hiring.
- Completion of a California P.O.S.T. approved basic police academy.
- Successful completion of the interview and background check processes.
- Possession of required security permits and certifications.
- Ability to pass qualifications for service weapons and Taser certification.
- First Aid, CPR, and AED certification in accordance with AHA guidelines.
- Strong critical thinking and decision-making abilities.
- Excellent customer service and interpersonal skills.
- Capacity to work outdoors in various weather conditions.
- Valid California driver’s license and ability to operate safety vehicles.
Education and Experience
Minimum Requirement: High school diploma or GED.
Preferred: Associate's degree and relevant experience in university public safety or law enforcement.
Physical Requirements
Candidates must be able to lift and move up to 50 lbs and perform physical activities such as standing, walking, and kneeling for extended periods.
Work Environment
The role may involve exposure to outdoor weather conditions and various environmental factors. Reasonable accommodations will be provided for individuals with disabilities.
