Job Summary

University of Utah Health is seeking a skilled Psychiatric Technician to join our team at the Huntsman Mental Health Institute (HMHI). As a Psychiatric Technician, you will play a vital role in providing high-quality patient care and support to individuals with mental health needs.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist with maintaining a safe and therapeutic environment for patients, including observing and documenting patient behavior and reporting any concerns to nursing staff.
  • Perform or assist with patient admissions, including gathering information for nursing assessment and searching patients and belongings for contraband.
  • Orient patients and their families to the facility and its policies and procedures.
  • Escort patients to off-unit appointments and activities, using therapeutic interventions to ensure patient safety.
  • Assist with providing a therapeutic milieu for patients, including encouraging participation in recreational activities and group therapies.
  • Support patients with supportive therapy, including leading activity and conversation groups.
  • Assist with developing patient behavioral expectations and may function as a preceptor to new Psychiatric Technicians.
  • Contribute to the unit's training and quality assurance programs, including ordering and maintaining clerical and patient supplies.
Requirements
  • 6 months of behavioral health or direct patient care experience, including CNA, MA, HCA, or Teacher's aide experience.
  • Current RQI Healthcare Provider eCredential through the University of Utah Health RQI system.
Working Conditions and Physical Demands

This position involves intensive work that may exert up to 50 pounds and may consistently require lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, or otherwise moving objects, such as medical equipment, or patients while providing care in a psychiatric setting. Workers in this position may be exposed to infectious diseases.
