Position Summary

The Consumer Loan Underwriter is responsible for evaluating consumer loan applications submitted to the organization. This role involves assessing application packages to determine the eligibility of credit requests based on established lending criteria.

Key Responsibilities
  • Engage with members regarding approvals and denials in a professional manner, providing comprehensive explanations for declines and potential future options.
  • Cross-promote relevant products and additional services such as GAP insurance, warranties, and other value-added offerings to support members' financial well-being.
  • Verify acceptable identification, ensure proper account funding, and confirm membership eligibility through appropriate documentation.
  • Ensure the accuracy of loan information, including all related documents, and maintain precise member and loan data in the system to facilitate smooth loan funding.
  • Respond promptly to telephone inquiries regarding credit and information requests, meticulously documenting all interactions.
  • Make credit decisions within assigned limits while adhering to current regulations and organizational policies, staying informed about changes in laws and industry trends.
  • Gather necessary components for loan applications, including credit reports, collateral evaluations, and financial statements, to make informed lending decisions.
  • Prepare necessary loan documentation such as Truth-in-Lending statements and financing agreements for disbursement.
  • Identify opportunities for improvement within the department and actively participate in enhancing processes.
  • Support the credit union's annual goals with enthusiasm.
  • Assist members with their loan-related needs to ensure a positive experience.
  • Provide financial guidance to members upon request.
  • Perform additional related duties as assigned.
  • Adhere to all company policies and relevant laws, including the Bank Secrecy Act and the Patriot Act.

Qualifications

Experience
  • 1-3 years of relevant experience, including time in preparatory roles.
Education/Certifications
  • A high school diploma or GED is mandatory.
Interpersonal Skills
  • Demonstrated courtesy, tact, and diplomacy are essential for this role, involving personal interactions for information exchange and advisory purposes.
Other Skills
  • Proficient in using computers, telephones, ten-key, and Microsoft Office applications. Strong oral and written communication skills with a keen attention to detail are required.
Physical Requirements
  • Primarily sedentary work with occasional lifting of up to 10 lbs. Must be able to navigate stairs in emergencies and operate standard office equipment.
Working Conditions
  • Work is performed indoors in a climate-controlled environment with minimal noise.
Mental and Emotional Requirements
  • Ability to work independently or as part of a team, follow instructions, and communicate effectively. Must manage diverse personalities and maintain high levels of customer service under pressure.
