Position Summary

Tucker Paving Inc. is seeking a skilled and experienced Hillman (Chuleador) to join our team. The Hillman (Chuleador) is responsible for assisting with grading and earthmoving operations on construction sites, ensuring proper site preparation and maintaining grade specifications.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist with the operation of heavy equipment, including bulldozers, graders, and excavators, to achieve precise grading and earthmoving tasks.
  • Work closely with the grading crew to ensure site preparation meets project specifications and standards.
  • Use grade stakes and other reference points to guide equipment operators and maintain proper grade alignment.
  • Monitor and measure grade elevations using leveling instruments and tools to ensure accuracy.
  • Communicate effectively with the crew and site supervisors to ensure smooth operations and resolve any issues.
  • Follow all safety protocols and regulations to ensure a safe working environment.
  • Perform routine maintenance checks on equipment and report any malfunctions or necessary repairs.
Qualifications
  • Proven experience as a Hillman (Chuleador) or similar role in the construction industry.
  • Minimum 1-year related experience.
  • Ability to read and interpret construction plans, blueprints, and grade stakes.
  • Proficient in using leveling instruments and tools for grade measurement.
  • Strong understanding of construction site safety practices and regulations.
  • Ability to work well in a team environment and communicate effectively with crew members and supervisors.
  • Physical ability to perform tasks that involve lifting, standing, and operating equipment for extended periods.
  • Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.
  • Ability to operate equipment safely and efficiently.
  • Exhibit a high level of safety consciousness and a clear understanding of equipment safety.
  • Ability to interpret blueprints/plans and construct accordingly.
  • Valid Driver license.
  • OSHA 30 preferred (but not required).
  • Ability to set up & use effectively, site level, grade laser, pipe laser and straight-line level.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with heavy equipment operation, particularly in grading and earthmoving.
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish is a plus.
Communication Skills
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instruction and communicate effectively.
Mathematical Skills
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals to compute rate, ration, percent.
Reasoning Ability
  • Requires independent judgement and conscious thinking.
Physical Demands
  • Ability to work as part of a team.
  • Ability to work on weekends, public holidays, and at night.
  • Ability to travel to wherever the job is needed.
  • Ability to work for long hours in all weather conditions.
  • Ability to stand for extended periods of time, and to stoop, bend, and crouch as required to perform key duties.
  • Ability to lift and carry, on a frequent basis, at least 50-90 pounds personally, and up to 150 pounds with assistance.
  • Maintain constant alertness to multiple concurrent activities of the construction site, including the activities of other employees and contractors, the operation of stationary equipment, and the movement of mobile equipment.
  • Frequently walk on uneven surfaces, including natural ground in varying weather conditions.
  • Sufficient skill and visual acuity, under varying degrees of light, darkness, and weather conditions.
Work Environment
  • Work is performed outdoors in all weather conditions.
  • Work environment periodically exposes the employees to high levels of noise, grease and dust this is typically associated with a construction project.
  • Employee regularly works near heavy equipment and moving machinery.
  • Work may involve a variety of substances commonly found on construction sites such as oil, grease, gasoline, diesel fuel, and tack.
  • Wear personal protective equipment (PPE) in designated operations and production areas as stated by OSHA and/or MSHA.
