POSITION SUMMARY
Under the clinical guidance of the Director of Nursing, the incumbent is responsible for delivering patient care through the nursing process of assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation. This role also involves directing and guiding patient education activities and ancillary staff while upholding professional nursing standards. The following responsibilities are included:
  • Assess the physical, psychological, and psychosocial aspects of patients within the healthcare unit and, when necessary, in housing units.
  • Utilize knowledge of illnesses, injuries, and diseases to gather health histories and conduct assessments.
  • Provide leadership to RNs, LPNs, MAs, CNAs, and other nursing professionals regarding medical aspects of patient care.
  • Monitor all patients receiving medications, maintaining accurate charts and records.
  • Employ therapeutic communication skills and effective interviewing techniques to gather relevant historical information and make appropriate referrals.
  • Deliver professional nursing services competently and thoroughly, adhering to established standards, protocols, policies, and procedures.
  • Make timely referrals to appropriate healthcare providers based on diagnostic tests, lab results, and nursing diagnoses.
  • Contact physicians for medication orders as necessary to ensure continuity of care.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of pharmacology, including drug reactions, interactions, side effects, cautions, and contraindications.
  • Administer medications safely and efficiently, consistent with prescribed orders and established standards, while maintaining proper documentation.
  • Participate in training for facility personnel on mental health requirements per relevant standards.
  • Adhere to correctional facility policies and procedures.
  • Perform duties within the limits of the State Nurse Practice Act, Code of Ethics for Nurses, and facility policies and standards.
  • Upon receiving necessary training, perform other related duties as assigned.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

The following requirements outline the minimum qualifications. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

LICENSURE: Current, valid State Registered Nursing License
CERTIFICATION: Current CPR Certification
EDUCATION: Graduate from an accredited nursing program. Associate's Degree required; Bachelor's Degree preferred.

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE: Minimum one (1) year of clinical experience; correctional nursing experience is advantageous.
