Position Overview:
  • The Surgical Technologist First Assistant plays a crucial role in supporting the surgical team throughout procedures.
  • This position involves assisting the surgeon with various technical tasks, including equipment selection, maintaining open incisions, controlling bleeding, and suturing incisions.
Key Responsibilities:
  • The Surgical Technologist First Assistant will report directly to the Director of Surgical Services.
  • All duties will be assigned by the Director or their designee, ensuring optimal patient care, procedure complexity, and physician preferences.
  • This role will adhere strictly to the guidelines set forth by the Association of Surgical Assistants and the American College of Surgeons (ACS).
  • The primary functions of the Surgical Technologist First Assistant include: 1) facilitating exposure; 2) ensuring hemostasis and closure; and 3) performing other intraoperative technical tasks that assist the surgeon in executing a safe and effective operation.
  • These responsibilities will be carried out under the supervision and direction of the surgeon, in compliance with Hospital Policies and Procedures.
Essential Qualifications:
  • Valid certification in surgical technology.
  • Completion of a Surgical Technologist First Assistant program that covers all necessary content areas of the "Core Curriculum of the Surgical Technologist First Assistant".
  • Current certifications (BLS) as required in specialized areas (Critical Care).
